Downgraded by Virgin on Final Redemption

I just checked in at Miami Airport for the final segment of my last redemption on Virgin Atlantic MIA-LHR. My seat was given away and I was downgraded to Economy because they are so overbooked. It's a bit annoying but it's also an occupational hazard for frequent flyers, and something like this was bound to happen sooner or later. They clearly will give preference to somebody booked on their own ticket stock rather than those of us on 236 stock.

I'm not sure how to play the compensation game, but the flight manager will come to the closer to boarding to discuss it. Here's hoping for a last minute no-show, but I doubt it. I'll let you know what happens.

EU rules apply, but this is always tricky with award tickets. I'd ask for $2k and then negotiate from there to $1k.
