Redemption Booking - Star Gold Baggage Privilages?

Hi,

Apologies if this is covered elesewhere but I could not see it. I am flying on a Diamond club redemtion booking this week on TG from HKG - LHR in F via BKK. Normally I travel very light but this time am taking the kitchen sink (wife and childs stuff!) with me. Ordinarily the +20KG Gold additional allowance would cover me. As it is I am likely to be at about 55KG against a 40KG limit. Any views as to whether they will just sting me or look kindly given that BMI was Star Alliance when I booked? Thanks in advance.

1 - The limit on F baggage is 40kg, per passenger, so if there are a couple of you travelling you'd have enough (think this isn't enough for you)
2 - As BMI is no longer in the star alliance you won't get the *G benefits any longer, unless you hold another *G card (Your profile doesn't seem to indicate that) - you could try and match to Aegean Airlines to get *G (to get the extra 20kg benefit) before your flight, they tend to be pretty quick about it, see this thread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/bmi-d...s-matches.html
This would actually then put you under the limit.

If you don't manage to get the *G then you may end up being hit for the extra 15kg surcharge unless you blag it, I know Thai are sometimes generous in not applying the fees and you are in First class, but worst case you might end up having to pay many hundreds of pounds in excess luggage fees, so you might want to consider whether you can shave ~15kgs off what you're taking, or chance it. As an FYI, the thai baggage website implies you will be charged $55 per extra kilo, so a max of about $825

Many thanks for your input. I am travelling alone unfortunately. I have been lax on getting my status matched as most of my travel is OneWorlkd but I have tried the A3 route today. Other than that hoping they don't sting me too much at the airport!
