Legality of BD's website

I'm not being funny, but on visiting the BMI website today, I notice they're offering 1,000 bonus miles to sign up to Diamond Club.

Nowhere does it say that if you do sign up, these bonus miles are likely to be worthless on 30 March - along with any status you may have accrued.

How legal can this be, in all seriousness?

Of course it is legal. bmi currently have to operate as a competing airline to IAG and carry on under a business as usual basis. The same reason why they are offering flight sales, bonus mile promotions to current DC members etc.

If you sign up, will you get 1,000 miles? Yes. Can you use those 1,000 miles plus any you earn in the short term? Yes.

On what grounds do you think it is illegal then? The ASA certainly won't give two hoots about it either from an advertising / promotional basis either.

If you see it again, make a citizen's arrest.

Sorry, but it's quite difficult for me to take your question seriously. Do you honestly believe that there is something illegal about giving away something for free that may or may not be useful to someone? I really cannot understand that logic at all. Recently I was given a coupon at an establishment for some discount on a future purchase. I noticed that the coupon had already expired. I suppose I should sue them for all I can get because they gave me something free that was worthless to me.

Problem is, nobody - not BA, not BD, not us - knows for sure when this deal will complete and what will happen to miles and status. All we do know is that BD will leave Star Alliance on completion. Whether or not BA decide to migrate people to BAEC, offer BA Bronze/Silver/Gold and convert our miles into BAPesos is an unanswered question.

Until then, it's business as usual.

Maybe SRB's latest skirmish will put the 30MAR date (which was the date notified to the EU as the earliest completion date) back again?
