Invol. Changes to an Award Booking

AC cancelled my first flight segment and rebooked me in economy. This is part of a multisegment international itinerary booked in J with bmi miles plus cash ticket. (1) I wonder what I can do at this time? I am seeing availability in J on an earlier flight that I'd rather take. How should I proceed with this already ticketed itn? I really don't want DC to mess this up. (2) Is there a way to make changes to this itn without having to cancel the whole ticket and starting over? (3) Are fees charged for making changes due to invol. changes to award bookings? (4) Does DC refund miles for downgrade? Any info, suggestions would be appreciated. Many thanks!

The ICC will rebook you onto that earlier flight you prefer in J if it is still available without a change fee due to airline schedule changes. The fact that it has already been ticketed doesn't matter.

Since the remainder of your itinerary is in J, the total mileage cost for the ticket is unchanged by flicking into Y for one segment. Therefore, no miles refund and hence changing to that earlier flight in J is the best way to proceed asap.
