Points or 0% Forex Fee

Hi, just joined the forum and thought I would pose this question to the many experts out there or those who have had experience with this matter.

I have an upcoming BW stay in the U.S. My Canadian MBNA Best Western card has a 2.5% foreign currency conversion fee. Staying at a BW property gives me 5 points on each dollar.

I am wondering if it is better to get the points and incur the ForEx fee or would I be better off using a 0% no ForEx fee card instead?

Do a bit of simple math. What are the points worth towards a room redemption vs. what is 2.5% of the room cost?

Say the room is CAD$200. Your FX fee is $5. The points are 1,000. What are 1,000 points worth? If they are worth 1/10th of a similar room then that's $20. If they are worth 1/40th of a room that's $5 so you are neither up nor down. If they are worth less than 1/40th of a room (e.g. a room is more than 40,000 points) then use the 0% card.

The points are likely worth more than the fee.
