If I plug in a return time of 13JUL07/1300 on avis.com, it gives me the same total charge for the 5-day rental as for the 7-day rental. Will there be any extra charges if I choose to return the car on 13JUL instead?

when you rent a car for more than 4 days and 3 hours through 7 days, the 1 week rate applies. If each location has different laws based on locality so if that particular locality has laws that allow for "$ per day" collections, you wil only save taxes and fees for each day less than 7. So in your case, your rental will only cost as much as you were originally quoted, minus per day tax/fee charges.

Hawaii comes to mind as I just came back from there. They have a less than a dollar per day licensing and a 3 dollar per day road tax kinda thing going on there, so applying hawaii's rules, and my Nissan Altima rental, you would have paid exactly 6.74 less than the weekly rental. Although you paid for a week, you didnt actually use the car for the full week so legally the taxes for those days cannot be charged.

I hate to tell you that it can be WORSE than that! Watch what you tell them when you are making a reservation on the AVISFIRST toll free reservation line. When they ask you the time for pick up, the flight you are on, and the return time, you could be hanging yourself, and here is why. Let's just say that you tell them you want pick up on Monday at 1:30 PM (based on your flight arriving at 1:15 PM with you having only carry on bags), and you tell them you are on DL flight XXX (which they immediately know is scheduled in at 1:15 PM), and you will return the car at 1 PM on Thursday, even though your flight is not until 4:57 PM that day. Then, the unthinkable happens, GASP, your DL flight arrives at 3:15 PM instead, and you pick up the car at 3:25 PM. You go right to your car, seeing your name and space number on the board, and you drive to the booth and provide the attendent your DL and RA, and drive off. YOU MAY HAVE JUST UNINTENTIONALLY SHOT YOURSELF IN THE FOOT!! If you did not ask the booth attendent to modify your rental/pickup time from 1:30 PM to 3:25 PM, and hence your return time to 3:25 PM (thinking that you have until the same time that you picked the car up), then Avis leaves your rental time as 1:30 PM. You leisurely drive back and return the car at 4 PM on Thursday, seeing as your DL flight is still approx. one hour away, and Avis charges you for your original rental, plus another full day, even though you are within the old 60 minute grace period, you are beyond the new 29 minute grace period, plus, the unchanged pick up and return times are also going to work against you, sometimes for huge charges. Watch out for discounted rates for the time of your scheduled rental, versus the day following your scheduled rental being at a much higher rate. For example, if you made your rez six months in advance at $27/day, but when you return the car "late" the rate is now $62 per day, that is what you will be charged for your "overage" time. Complicated and a bit outrageous!  :td:

I want to book a rental from 1500 one day to 1630 the next. I only seem to get 2 day charges in the quote. I see Alamo charges $10.99 late fee plus the additional charges.

Does anyone NOT charge a late fee but will charge a reasonable hourly rate after the 24hrs. I take it I would be charged for 2hrs after the initial 24hrs so would not get any 29/59 minute grace period?

Maybe I could be really tight and wait till 1331, get a company with a 59 min grace period then return at 1630! :p

I know with my corporate rentals through Avis, the hourly rate is 1/2 of the daily rate, and everything gets rounded up. So, anything less than 1 day is charged for 1 day. 1 day and anything less than 60 minutes is 1.5 days charge. 1 day and 61+ minutes is charged for 2 days.

Call the national consumer affairs line and complain. Have your RA number with you when you call. Explain the situation, calmy, and chances are you will have the money credited back to your card. I have done that several times and it has worked for me each time!
