Status: PC
Location: ROC
Booked: intermediate (one-way to LGA)
Offered: nothing. Requested anything with AWD or I would cancel.
Received: 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, 22k miles

I made it about 10 miles away when I gave up. The roads had really deteriorated and the AWD in the Mitsubishi was a joke. I'm not sure if this or the Nissan Versa I had 11 years ago is the worst car I have ever driven. On the bright side, the counter agent recognized my status and I appreciated the AWD vehicle.

Interestingly, phone reservations agent could not change the drop-off location back to ROC. However the guy closing out contracts in the garage was able to do it in less than a minute, and it adjusted the rate accordingly as well. I'm out $40 but it's not the end of the world; had I left a couple of hours earlier, I would have beat the plane home (as the delay was about the same amount of time it would have taken to drive).

So you booked via app and just didn't go there... Is that ok and can you cancel just when arriving?

Yes, you can no-show without penalty. Unless they accidentally give your car to someone else and open your rental. Then it's a pain to get them to fix it.

Location: IAH
Booked: Full Size
Offered: Nothing in app.
Received: Chevy Suburban w/ 55k miles (hate how large this is). They initially only had EVs and Minivans, so I was going to take a Voyager but then saw it had a Check Engine Light on. They tried to get me to take it anyways, but I wasn't going to deal with that headache.

Location: LAS
Booked: Full Size

Received: Offered in person two EVs: Mach E or Ionic 5, took the Mach E and then found out how much of a hassle charging a non tesla is....

Status: PC
Location: YUL
Booked: intermediate
Offered: Dodge Charger or Chevrolet Malibu
Received: Chevrolet Malibu LT, 30k km

Would've taken the Charger if the back seats went down, since my dad has skis. The Malibu was fine and we won't be using it a lot. It was cheaper for four days than the round-trip shuttle to Mont Tremblant for two of us.

Makes me miss my old Malibu MAXX since it was so much better than whatever this is.

Status: PC
Location: PVD
Booked: Intermediate SUV
Offered: Dodge Hornet PHEV
Received: Jeep Wrangler Willy's PHEV

Nothing on the app- super slim pickings. Ended up in a wrangler with 46,000 miles and a desperate need for an alignment. Getting it up to 85 on the mass pike was quite the adventure

Should've just taken the hornet.

Yep.

Status: PC
Location: BWI
Booked: intermediate
Offered: Kia Forte (sigh...)
Received: picked a new Dodge Hornet R/T hybrid via app

I was quite prepared to hate this thing given my prior experiences with Stellantis products, but it seems well-built, solid, rides well for a smallish SUV, and handles more like a sports sedan than a tall station wagon (aka SUV :-) Avis never plugs in their plug-in hybrids, so the battery is completely flat. Despite that, it moves pretty smartly. So far I haven't found a place to charge it.

Oh and turns out it's really a rebadged Alfa Romeo Tonale, which explains the verve (and the tight quality compared to local builds; yes I know Alfas have a poor rep as well, but so far no problems)

This thing should be selling well, but I think Stellantis has burned their brands in the US. I have only seen a few on the road and it's been for sale for 2-3 years now. They are sitting on dealer lots for over a year in some cases.

Status: PC
Location: LAX
Booked: Premium
Offered: Nothing in app.
Received: Offered in person Hyundai Sonata

Prepaid reservation. They basically had nothing left. They offered me the Jeep Wrangler and made some joke about doors falling off. I politely declined. Took them a long time before finding a Hyundai Sonata with only a couple of hundred miles on the clock. I asked what class it is but the agent tried to avoid the question. She just told me to take it. The contract said "Rented: Premium" and "Charged: Premium". Later on in the app I noticed the Sonata is an intermediate. So I got a two class downgrade. Called CS and they told me that they never guarantee a particular car. Seems that the supervisor I talked to had no idea what he was doing. In the end I convinced him to refund the difference in rates, which was 50USD according to him. Much less in reality... ;)

The Hyundai Sonata is generally considered a full-size in rental fleets. The Elantra would have been a mid-size.

The order of lower car classes is pretty consistent across rental agencies:
  • Economy (Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio)
  • Compact (Nissan Versa)
  • Mid-size/intermediate (Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Cruze)
  • Standard (VW Jetta)
  • Full-size (Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Malibu)
  • Premium (Nissan Maxima, Toyota Crown)
  • Luxury (Chrysler 300, Cadillac XT5 at Avis for some reason)
The cars mentioned are just examples and obviously YMMV. But in the example you mentioned, a Sonata is a one-class downgrade from a premium (and from a Maxima, arguably an upgrade ;)).

You're right. I somehow incorrectly remembered F is full size. It said "E" in the app, so full-size.
Now when I see my eReceipt, I also see that it says my status is "PREFERRED" even though it's PC. I guess that confirms what others have written, that a European PC status is not recognized in the US.

I too am forced to use Avis for work - we used to have National, and I really miss it.
That being said, I'm having a better start to the year than some on this thread :p

For me all my rentals are Full Size and my status is PC. I usually just take whatever is given to me because I'm not picky (one exception to that rule below):

Location: PHX
Offered/Received: Kia Telluride

Location: CVG

Offered/Received: Dodge Ram pickup - low air in one of the tires, but was still about 30 psi and I was very late, and I was only going a few miles, so didn't bother with switching

Location: MCO (one way to TPA)

Offered/Received: Kia Telluride

Location: FNT (one way to DTW)

Offered/Received: VW Atlas - when checking in was told "I hope you like it, because only other thing we have is a Ford Transit Van". Smelled like cigarettes, but oh well.

Location: DEN

Offered: Camry or Sonata or Malibu
Requested: An SUV as we were going to the mountains
Received: Honda CRV

Location: GUC

Offered/Received: Genesis GV80

Status: PC
Location: PHx
Booked: Full
Offered: Corolla Cross with 1,000 miles
Taken: Same

App offered nothing and the preferred counter was 20 people deep, There were a bunch of Hornets, and I would’ve taken one of those if I had the opportunity.

The Corolla Cross is loaded with tech at the expense of an anemic 4 banger wedded to a CVT transmission. I say a prayer every time I merge in Phoenix expressway traffic.

it’s showing 40 MPG so I guess I have that going for me?

After spending a week in one, going forward I would take a Hornet again over just about anything besides a BMW or maybe Audi, though I'd rather not have the (plug-in) hybrid version. There were no compatible charging stations near me. With no charge I only got about 28mpg because with that tiny 1.3L wheezer engine you do have to bury the pedal fairly often. It would run on volts for a slow takeoff but that would only last a few seconds. I did throw a quick charge on it once which lasted about two miles... I guess the entire point of a PHEV is for short trips where it will run off battery (unless you floor it) for 20-30mi which would have worked for me had there been overnight charging available. But I was not going to sit in the parking lot of the Walgreens for hours...

Status: PC
Location: YUL
Booked: intermediate
Offered: new-ish Dodge Charger at counter (no app upgrade possible here)
Received: took it.

I asked if it had AWD given the snowy forecast. Agent said yes to get rid of me, and it did not, but it seems all cars are required to have winter tires here which it did, so it handled the small flurry just fine. Montréal-area roads are practically lunar what with all the broken pavement and axle-breaking potholes, not to mention the heavy road salt that will melt your car after 5-10 years.

I'd never buy a new car if I lived here.

Damn. I should've taken the Charger when I was there two weeks ago. Is it red or white?
