Bald tires
 

Picked up my car at LAS today, Before leaving the Avis dim garage, I checked the car out, including the tires. Nothing seemed amiss. However, while later observing the car parked outside in the daylight, I noticed that the two front tires were extremely worn. Planning on heading hundreds of miles into remote areas far from services, I decided that I should get an exchange car with better tires before leaving tomorrow. (Note: Odometer has 51K miles. Looks like original tires on them )

Calling Avis, I got routed to their Roadside Assistance number, and the agent said I should be able to exchange the car, but would need to call back tomorrow when I planned to exchange it.

Is changing a car like this a problem-free experience, or should I anticipate some unpleasant issues? Any advice would be appreciated.

Just go to the Avis location, tell the return agent you're swapping cars BEFORE they try to check it in. Take the keys to the desk and let them know what's up. They'll swap you out easily. Take your new car to the return area to move all your stuff to the new car (if necessary) and head out. I've done this for many reasons, including bald tires, and haven't had issues. If you're going to swap when the lot is empty, you might have to wait a bit for a car (same as anyone with a reservation) but should be relatively quick and painless.

OP: just make sure that you top up the gas tank before you do the swap.

OP here. Called Roadside Assist number this morning. Agent was able to pull info from yesterday’s call. She directed me to nearby location that was very accommodating. They swapped the SUV with a much newer one with great tires. Went from a vehicle with 51K miles to one with 7K.
