SAN - drive into Mexico ?
Hi, I'm looking for a rental option from SAN area to drive into Mexico and back ... online reviews indicate that Avis has allowed this in the past, but the comments are 5 years old

Here are the published policies from the major companies in San Diego as they relate to driving into Mexico:
Avis
Mexico: Corporate account customers are allowed to drive the vehicle into Mexico with certain restrictions and the purchase of additional insurance. Check with the location for details. One-way rentals are not allowed to Mexico.
Budget
Mexico: Vehicles rented at this location are allowed to travel into Mexico with some restrictions and the purchase of additional insurance. Check with the location for details.
Hertz
Only the following Hertz vehicles may be driven to but not dropped off in Mexico from this location. Please check at the time of rental for authorization and purchase of the mandatory Mexico Insurance Policy for the following amount:

Only the original renter may purchase the Mexico Insurance. The Mexico Insurance can only be added to rentals where the forms of payment is a credit card. Cash or Hertz Charge Cards are not an acceptable form of payment.
Mexican law does not allow Mexican citizens to bring a U.S. vehicle into Mexico, or operate a U.S. vehicle within Mexico. The sale of Mexico insurance to a citizen of Mexico is not permitted.
Enterprise/National/Alamo
Mexico insurance is required to drive into Mexico, and can be purchased at this location. Renters must be at least 25 years old to be eligible. The Mexico insurance price depends on the type of vehicle rented: $35 per day for Economy through Full Size cars, $40 per day for Minivans and Small SUVs, and $50 per day for 12 or 15 Passenger vans (only available for specific corporate accounts). All other vehicles cannot be driven into Mexico.
