Avis Preferred PLUS - Complimentary Upgrade

Currently Avis Preferred PLUS tier level due to Chase Saphire Reserve Card which is an Infinite VISA level credit card.

AVIS web site states Avis Preferred PLUS provide Complimentary Upgrade:
"As a member of Avis Preferred Plus, you can still skip the counter and enjoy all the great benefits of Avis Preferred - plus a whole lot more:
Complimentary upgrades (whenever available)."

When I contract AVIS restorations international in Barcelona I'm advised it's available everywhere in Europe.
When I contacted US reservations they claim NOT available in Europe.

Impossible to written explanation of "where applicable" for this complimentary upgrade which si why AVIS is so confused by the promo.
Contact AVIS Cork, Ireland and teh rep kept say NO but then referred to a lower level AVIS Preferred trier level which I'm not, as I'm PLUS!

Does anyone have experience using the free car upgrade in Europe with tier level status Avis Preferred Plus?

1. Take a deep breath
2. Reset your expectations
3. Preferred Plus is not an open invitation to an upgrade
4. The Preferred programme basically allows you to bypass the counter (after your first rental) and earn more points
5. It's similar to Hertz Five Star ... "upgrades where available" ... far from a guarantee and not all (particularly franchise) locations participate or willingly give you a better car for nothing ... and the US>EU and EU>US doesn't always translate ...
6. Upgrades are invariably limited unto a certain level (i.e. full-size in the US) ... doesn't mean you won't let lucky and receive an SUV or a luxury
7. If you want a particular vehicle, rent it ... don't expect to upgrade into it ...

You seem to like to mix n' match stories from different companies

AVIS Preferred Plus tier status is clearly documented on the web site does claim to be providing a complimentary upgrade but (whenever available - is not defined).
AVIS Barcelona reservation agents claim complimentary upgrade is applicable on availability but when I wrote to three AVIS European locations the feedback was not applicable here.
So until AVIS knows their own program specifics on upgrades the general 'whenever applicable' comment will be promoting a false perk.

Since AVIS has no documentation to support 'whenever available' it may only be available in US. Since AVIS did not competently document the Avis agents cannot confirm the rules.

"Whenever available" basically means upgrade is at the discretion of the agents/location. Avis does not state that upgrades are guaranteed.

Missed the point.

AVIS should be able to say the Complimentary Upgrade is optional and available WORLD wide in all countries at location discretion.
Except AVIS verbally says it's Not available outside of US, Canada, Virgin Island and Puerto Rico.
Then when you call Europe AVIS in Barcelona they advise it is optionally available in Europe at every location depending on availability.

So AVIS internally is confused when if it's not available outdo of US, Canada, Virgin Island and Puerto Rico then that would make it easier to check only those locations.

But AVIS lacks teh integrity to clarity regions applicable and whenever available.

Just another example of a sloppily AVIS FALSE promotion that cannot be utilized.

Upgrades are a benefit, not a promotion. Upgrades are not guaranteed.
Avis outside of the States are often franchises and have separate policies.

Good luck finding a car program that fits your needs. It seems like Avis does not match what you are looking for.

AVIS has written is so vague it may Not exist anywhere at anytime.

AVIS works for me ONLy because of a special discount in US that includes all insurance at good price.

Taking advantage of the other perks like Loyalty program tier status and finding NOBODY in AVIS know show it works is misleading advertisement.

I grant you AVIS does not care ------ just the model of FALSE Advertising accept as it hopes to establish LOYALTY with customers.

To say it again and repeat what has already been said:

It's not misleading, but simply vague, because otherwise people would take upgrades as granted. Upgrades do also exist in Europe, where I normally rent my cars, depending on the avis location, franchise or not etc. So it really depends from case to case.
Especially small locations that are franchise are often confused with either the status or the AWD connected to a FFP and do not give you the option to skip the line.

I usually reserve a full size and I sometimes get upgraded to a premium (and twice to a luxury). Very much a YMMV.

I focused on Avis Preferred PUS tier status and a AVIS web page claiming Complimentary upgrade which AVIS cannot determine where it exists.

1. What is your AVIS tier status?
2. Which locations did you rent from when you were given free upgrade in Europe and when?
3. Which level cals car did you reserve initially and what was the upgrade class?

what is you AVIS tier level?
When you're frequent renter of one location as I have been a few times the agent does give out free upgrades independent of tier status.

This whole thread is kind of comical. Those of us who have long term experience with Avis know that the whole rental experience varies and status does not mean much.

Preferred Plus:
Location?
AVIs claims to offer an upgrade with this tier level status but where applicable is debatable.

Did your status Preferred PLUs allow the upgrade or did you rent same locations numerous times and they just gave it to you?
