Avis-Amazon promo - is this a scam?

According to this page, there is a promo where you can get 10% of the value of your rental back in Amazon gift cards when you link your Amazon account and book through that. I had a rental in December where I did this, followed all of the instructions, and never got anything. I have called Avis a few times now, and no one has any idea what I'm talking about. Is this not a real promotion? If it is, has anyone actually gotten their Amazon gift cards?

Thanks!

It has worked for me. You have to be careful, because the Amazon rate is not always the cheapest rate. You might get a better rate without an AWD or with a different AWD. If you want to use it, make sure that the “Amazon Benefits” is selected in the AWD field. If you’re properly signed up and using the Amazon Benefits rate, then it will say so on your confirmation.

The gift card is typically deposited in my account within 24-48 hours, and I get an email from Amazon letting me know that Avis sent me a gift card.

I also followed all the instructions and got nothing. I won't bother with it again.

Amazon Avis in London SCAM!

Avis scammed my 74 year old mother. We rented because of the relationship with amazon. Don't use avis. They will do a bait and switch on you and charge you more everytime. Not a decent company, cost my mom $300 more to rent the car for one week in london.

I had a good experience with Amazon rate late week. I had several other AWDs (AARP, AAA, Citigroup, Hilton) and the Amazon rate was the cheapest --- and it also included money back in an Amazon gift card which I received immediately via email after rental return.

Now, I am booking a new trip in a few months and so far the Amazon rate is the highest...so I guess it varies.

So glad I found this forum...

Thought I was going crazy! I tried this in Oct 2018 and again a few weeks ago (end of Jun 2019). Clicked through the links, booked my reservation, completed the rental and never heard another thing. Contacted Amazon and Avis both times (each told me to contact the other party). Never have resolved this and agents have no idea what I might have done wrong! Total scam!

It works for me pretty consistently. When you make the reservation, does “Amazon Benefits” show as your AWD?

I do always check it against my other AWD, and book the lowest available rate out of an ethical obligation to my company. But the Amazon Benefits rate is rarely more expensive, usually equal, and sometimes cheaper. I don’t think I have ever NOT received the gift card on an Amazon Benefits booking.

I recently booked through the Amazon link and the rental location simply took the Amazon 10% off the final bill as a discount.

YMMV: I was surprised to receive a gift card for 10% of the value connected to a points booking. Not 10% of the taxes and fees, but 10% of the base rate that I covered with points. That makes for a pretty good deal.

Amazon Avis Gift Card

It’s not a scam just make sure when you do your reservations it’s online through the Avis app are website. On the website you will see the yellow button click to login with your Amex account. You have to have your amazon account to be able to login from partner sites. That can be done through account settings also your phone has to have location service turn on. I found it best to become and Avis preferred member and linked the Avis and amazon accounts together. Also the same email used on amazon login has to be the same as the one on Avis reservation. You can change the name on car rental after you login to the linked accounts ( like amazon in my name but my husband rented car). I’ve used it 3 times so far saved 30% plus 10% gift cards. My two weekly rental 7 days was $157 full size and the one weekend Friday-Monday was $70.
plz check you email for it to say Avis sent you a gift card for Amazon. They don’t come from amazon.

You have to select 'Amazon Benefits' on the Avis rental screen

While this program is not a scam, the Avis website could be smarter with how it handles discount codes. Like others that have commented here, I thought I had done everything correctly. I logged into Avis using my Amazon credentials, saw the good pricing, booked my rental, etc. Waited a couple of weeks, checked Amazon, nothing. Both chatted and called Amazon support and no one had ever heard of the program. Then called Avis support and figured out the problem. There are rectangular drop down menu selections on the Avis screen when you are putting in your details like pickup/dropoff location, dates, etc. You would think that Amazon Benefits would be the default code if you have just logged in with your Amazon credentials - but no, there is a 'primary' discount code that is the default. So you must click on the little dropdown 'v' next to 'Discount Codes' first, then click again on the little drop down 'v' next to 'Enter a Discount Code'. Then you will see 'Amazon Benefits'.

My guess is for those that have not experienced the issue, 'Amazon Benefits' could be your default. That is not the case for me, the company I work for has preferred rates and that is my default drop down.

The irony of all this: my company preferred rates are actually better than the Amazon rates even factoring in the 10% gift card some of the time. So I have to select both and compare (as others have stated as well re: comparing).

Good luck and Gig'em Aggies!

I just did the Amazon promo this week. I prepaid so expected 10% gift card of the base amount, but got only 5%. Gift card was deposited the night of the rental return. Seems like I need to contact Avis and inquire. Gift card email came from Amazon Incentive program if that helps anyone in the future.

unitedflyer007 Jun 26, 2024 9:15 am

I've tried it. You get the Amazon gift but the rate also goes up by that amount!
