Upgrade was not possible because they didn't have cars (classes from D and above are on request only). They therefore agreed to charge only class C (Compact). Worked out great because Passat was exactly the right car for me.

Received:: 2017 Lincoln MKT. Swapped to the Lincoln via the app for free. Definitely the highest spec Lincoln I've had through Avis. Town Car trim with pano sunroof, Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Departure, Auto on/off high beams and auto wipers. Only downside is that it wasn't very clean. Sticky residue on the air vents, and in the center console. papers from previous renters stuffed between the seats etc.
