Can anyone please tell me if we have to use United's AWD or just the coupon code? I am an Avis Presidential member with a far better rate, but would like to of course earn the miles too!

While there's no need to use the United AWD, make sure you use an AWD that allows earning miles. Not all AWDs do. So while it's perfectly safe to use a different airline's (or hotel's) AWD, beware of AWDs that you haven't used before in earning partner miles/points.

(I'm not clear whether your Avis Presidential member rate is because of a default AWD, or not AWD at all. Be aware that Avis tends to remember the first AWD you ever used and plugs it in as your default -- or at least it does in my case -- so check to see whether there's something in the AWD field, whether you typed it in or not.)
