AVIANCA Brasil Luggage Allowance

Does anyone know if Avianca Brasil adheres to Star Alliance Gold Luggage Allowance? I called and was told that I am only allowed 1 bag on Avianca Brasil but 2 bags on Avianca.

I have 2 separate tickets, CWB-GRU on Avianca Brazil and connecting onto to Air Canada separate tickets, GRU-YYZ. So what is my luggage allowance for the CWB-GRU segment?

Star alliance response

Thank you for writing to us at the Star Alliance Help Desk.

By being a Star Alliance Gold member, and depending on the ticketing rules of your journey, you are allowed to check-in an additional 20kg (44 pounds) or one additional piece of luggage, which means you can check in three bags instead of two.

If you feel that you are eligible kindly contact us so that we will post a complaint against airline.

Therefore, for specific information, you will need to get in touch with the operating carrier directly.

Star Alliance offers to their Gold members an extra baggage allowance: You can take an extra 20 kg where the weight concept applies or an extra piece of baggage where the piece concept applies. This is valid for all Star Alliance member airlines.

On domestic flights of Avianca Brasil the weight concept applies so as a Star Alliance Gold member you can take additional 20kg of baggage to the regular allowance but not an additional second bag free of charge.

The bold marked text ist not true.

With the weight concept, your allowance as *G will be 20k higher to what your ticket says... But the number of bags is not limited... So if your allowance would be 40kgs you could check-in 10 bags à 4kgs, as only the total weight counts.

Very odd but thats a Star Alliance response. Avianca Brasil domestic policy.

Star Gold, 1 Bag only of 23kg plus extra 20kg's.

The Avianca Brazil site says nothing about only 1 bag, for domestic flights 23kgs were allowed:

Domestic flights
The baggage allowance established by Avianca Brasil on domestic flights are:
Adult – 23 kg.
Child – 23 kg.
Infant – 10 kg*.

We called and their top tier which is Diamond also gets this allocation. Unless you're flying on an international route on 1 ticket. When we called we were told that Avianca has the Star Alliance allowance but not Avianca Brazil for domestic flights in Brazil.

This is nonsense. You'll be allowed up to 43kg and you can check as many bags as you want within this limit.

O6 has changed their policy for checked baggage on domestic flights.

Promo fare has no baggage allowance, how does it work with *G? Do we still get free checked baggage up to 20kg?

This is due to a huge change on Brazilian civil aviation rules specially about luggage. We lost our great capacity to have at least 2 x 32kg as minimum for any destination outside South American and 23kg on domestic flights - YQ charges are now allowed as well...

The way local companies are taking it officially is just one piece of 23kg when you paid for that in your fare. But I doubt a little they are really enforcing it.

All of them including O6 respect the extra 20kg for *G's even if your fare has no luggage rights on it. You can have a second piece in such cases.

Does anyone know if award flights on O6 (domestic flight) booked though UA should come with baggage included?
