Check through on different tickets
I will be on a revenue OZ C ticket ICN SYD and then on a separate ticket SYD AKL with Air NZ, anybody knows if OZ will be able to check me an my bag through to NZ? If not I might have to book a later flight to allow time for immigration/customs... Thanks

OZ-Air NZ should be able to interline, even on separate tickets. Also, you’re transferring on an international-international itinerary, so my understanding is you don’t have to clear immigration and customs. I’m just assuming as I’ve never had to try since my end destination is always SYD, so don’t take my words as absolute truth. But there’s a separate transfer counter after you deplane before immigration and customs.

I've never had any problem checking bags to UA and NH on separate tickets. All OZ needs is the itinerary with a PNR to make sure the bags don't get lost before the leave OZ's care and that the other airline can match them to their ticket. I'm usually transferring from OZ to NH/UA domestic so I'll see my bags before I recheck them.
I'd assume that OZ will, at a minimum, check bags through to all of *A and their non*A partners.

I have checked bags through on many Star Alliance flights. They only issues I have had have been at smaller US airports that don't handle many international flights. Once I asked for a supervisor, the bags were checked through to my final destination.

bumping this old thread for recent data points. are Asiana agents still willing to do a through check on separate tickets?
I'm hoping to check through from GMP-HND on OZ, then HND-ORD UA. I'll be dealing with C class agents at GMP, if it makes any difference.
TIA

I'm used to dealing with AA agents in my small-town USA airport, and while they're perfectly lovely they will NOT through check for any reason. I'm just trying to gauge the willingness of an Asiana agent at GMP to do so.

Yeah I am definitely not worried about the baggage allowance on your OZ segment. All OZ flights come with bags. I am more worried about that NZ segment you ticketed on its own as NZ sells "seat only" fares which don't include bags even for *G. You won't be able to through-check if your NZ flight does not have bags.
I'm trying to gauge whether the Asiana agents at GMP are likely--and yes, I realize it's conjecture--to allow me to through-check luggage to my UA ticket.
(for more detail, I'm transiting through HND, and since we can't currently enter Japan, we won't be able to check a bag on the way home...UNLESS I can convince the agents at GMP to through check.)

answering my own question for anyone who's looking in the future, the OZ agent at GMP had no qualms through-checking our luggage on two different tickets from OZ to UA. ymmv, of course.
