I'm not interested in switching over to them, but I expect that a number of Star Alliance carriers will have some sort of status match offer when it occurs (I believe that's what has happened in past when carriers have exited the alliance) and then I can switch over to a new Star Alliance carrier and just burn off whatever points I have left that are now in Korean Air at my leisure.
I remember when Spanair went bankrupt, some of the other *A carriers offered status matches, but when bmi went into BA and when USAir became American, I don't remember the same thing happening. I think because they retained their status just in a new airline, the other airlines were not so motivated.

Hey OZ experts,

I am flying of a paid "F" fare SFO-ZRH-JNB, and JNB-FRA-SFO for a total of 22,131 miles.

Do I earn 150% miles on these flights? Which means that I will credit 33,196 miles to my OZ account?

And I need 40K to earn Diamond?

I appreciate your clarification of this!!

THANKS!

Correct.

Although in your specific situation I would consider other programs that are more generous with credit for Swiss/Lufthansa first class. For example, Aegean Miles + Bonus awards 300% for all Swiss and Lufthansa first class fares, and you only need 48000 miles in the first year to earn Aegean Gold (*G). This roundtrip would get you there alone, putting you at over 60000 miles if every segment is in First Class.

And past the first year Aegean only requires 24000 miles a year or 12000 + 4 segments on Aegean.

I thought the 48,000 miles on any carrier was to upgrade from Silver to Gold. Starting at zero, I would need 72,000 partner miles. And at 66,000 miles, I'm short.

Yes starting from 0 you would need 72000 partner miles.

Wow that's good to know. My apologies, I completely missed that point.

I'll leave the link to wheretocredit.com which shows all your options. But in that case OZ club may very well be your best option.

The big uncertainty hanging all over this of course is the question of when OZ/KE will finally merge and OZ leaves *A...

I thought it was acted, unless there is a miracle. But hopefully I am wrong and OZ stays standalone in *A.

Oh it's definitely happening — the only question is when, and for how long you'll get *G benefits (i.e. if the merger happens in 2022 then it might make more sense to credit to a different program, but if it's 2024+ then 2 years of OZ Diamond is probably worth it)

Has the "merger" been officially announced? I haven't been following it closely because I haven't been traveling much (zero air travel actually) over the last year or so.

Trying to figure out what the conditions are for maintaining my Asiana Club Diamond (*A Gold) status.

My app says that it expires in May 2022 (extended 1 year due to COVID I'm guessing). Does that mean that I have until April (or May) of 2022 to earn the remaining miles to achieve Asiana Diamond again? Or is the qualification window shorter than my status expiration, as Asiana's webpage seems to suggest the qualifying window is only extended by 6 months:

NOTHING will happen for consumers until at least 2024 or later. They're barely rolling through certifications and government dealings now. It's not gonna happen any time soon

Thanks for the update. With international travel likely remaining down in the near-term, I wonder if KE now regrets the decision to swallow OZ.

Unclear, but I can tell you 100% that Hyundai Development Company is still pissed they weren't offered the terms the Hanjin Group were given. I'm still mad that this is happening. KE has .... prices because the competition is already low. It's gonna get worse.

I'm still holding onto the tiny chances that some regulators don't approve the deal. To be honest, it shouldn't get approved...but we all know how things actually work.

Maybe my dream can come true and KE will jump ship to *A 😂😂. I just want to fly direct to my hometown without paying 1600 round-trip.

So although they extended my status for a year... they also pushed the start of the evaluation period up by a year. (So instead of my previous May 2019 to April 2021, it's now June 2020 to May 2022). Of course, most of my requalification flying was in Late 2019 and would now count for nothing.

Anyone have a sense of whether they'll extend status and the qualification window again? Would be ridiculous to expect everyone to fly enough to maintain status if their expiration is anytime in the first half of 2022, in my opinion
