I was on OZ102 on 3/27/14 on a 747 and was upgraded to First from Business. We were 8/10 and I think 6 of us were upgraded to First. It was nice for an 1:30 hour flight but I was a bit surprised at the gate when my boarding pass beeped and I was told that my seat was changed.

Just flew OZ362 PVG-ICN. It was a 744 and got to sit in first. Only 6 of us.
Flight was very delayed so actually got to experience it for more than the 90 min flight. Menu stated business class. Service was great

You should be lucky just to get an A330, 747, 777 even if it is 2 class. I got stuck on an A321 from ICN - NRT about 4 weeks ago and it was about the equivalent of flying US domestic F with slightly better seats and worse food (seriously food was awful - pictures in my TR over in the TR forum).
Count yourselves lucky to even have a widebody because it is possibly to get downgauged all the way down to the A321

Check-in agents definitely have your original itinerary and are very accommodating. Everything except on board was typical F service. I suppose this could still be YMMV but I made out well.
This helped tremendously at ICN. I checked-in, baggage tagged as F, then went to eat some komtan for breakfast before going through security. Lineup was non-existent as I went for breakfast but both sides literally jammed as I came back down from the restaurant area.
Asked for and received a nice escort through the side security line and into the F lounge where I was able to meet and catch up with my friend Johnnie Walker "Blue".
On board service was great and first out baggage is always nice.

Does this mean I'll be seated in F but receive J service? I'm not that worried given its such a short flight but would like to know what to expect. Is there much difference between J and F service on this leg?
I'll definitely try and find an old itinerary which shows F booking to try and get NRT F lounge access.

Your lounge access is determined by the boarding pass you hold the day of travel, and not what your original booking class was, even if you got downgraded involuntarily.
If your boarding pass says C, you get C lounge access, period. (sitting in an F seat doesn't matter: what matters is the class of service on the BP)
The lounge agents at NRT are very strict about this: a friend of mine was in the same shoes as you last month, and didn't get into the F lounge.
FWIW, the C lounge at NRT is still pretty good, and not too much different from the F lounge.

Is there an official policy for who can pre-assign F cabin seats on the A380 operated ICN-NRT flights that are only selling J?
Is it worth trying for on the day of departure? (I realize it will be J class catering and service, just a slightly nicer seat)

OZ has a service called "Royal Business", charged of course, for the F seats on J only flights. If they've assigned all the J seats then they'll assign the F seats to elites or lucky non elites who are on a J fare. Of course sometimes you get really lucky, a couple of years ago I got a double seat Op Up from ICN to NRT when they oversold Y on a 747, still only Business service though.
