Intra-Asia Flight Help Needed
I have been struggling with this for months trying to figure out how to get around Asia.
I need to go from HKG to PEK, PEK to TYO, TYO to BKK and BKK to HKG in November. I do not want to spend very much on these flights if possible but some a pricing out to over $500 o/w!!! Any suggestions. I am strongly considering the NWA Intra-Asia award PEK - TYO for 20K but they do not allow o/w awards. Would prefer premium class but I must admit that is not looking good (I booked SGN to BKK last year in J on TG for well under $200) The CX Asia pass includes US - HKG which I don't need. Zuji.com prices are not all that great from what people rave about the site. Please help... |
Go backwards.
Start in BKK. BKK-HKG-NRT can be had on CX for something like US$300 in coach. Business is more of course. You'd need to contact a Thai TA for special fares. Alternatively you may redeem an intra-asia award on CX on Alaska MVP! When in NRT, then get NRT-PEK-NRT on NW. |
What about:
HKG-TYO-PEK-TYO-HKG on NW (20k) Then once back in HKG, purchase a cheap ticket to BKK. I know it's a bit more flying, but then again, it will drop your costs down to around 200-300 depending on taxes. If you can get them, the best value for intra asia is NW at 30k for WBC. |
These were a couple of great suggestions. I am approaching the NW angle. With CX awards I have to fly through HKG so much. I already go there like 3 or 4 times. May not do PEK because they are quoting $150 for the Chinese visa even though I can get the HKG to PEK flight for like $25 but we were only going to be there one or two days. The increase in visa cost has to be hurting the tourist trade. What can I expect to pay for a ticket from BKK to HKG on like TG or CX?

Your trip may already be over now, but you can get Chinese visas in Hong Kong much cheaper than you can in ths states. If you have 2-3 days in Hong Kong then you can get your visa there...

Thanks for the advice! We skipped China because of the Visa fees. If they want to punish the U.S. citizens for the high fees the U.S. charges them I am not going to play their game with my travel dollars. We wanted to spend a couple of days in Beijing but skipped it and went straight to Tokyo/Kyoto and had a great time. We have spent a little too much time in HKG and are going to be back two more times to transit via CX. We spent one night in HKG airport which is a pretty good airport to spend the night in. I went around trying to get an inexpensive hotel and they wanted $200USD or more a night and those actually sold out as I walked around trying to negotiate. Hong Kong seems to be in a different time zone than most of Asia so I hope not to return in the near future. Vietnam is as great as always (as I am a millionaire here) but this nasty Typhoon warning headed straight to my beach front hotel in Nha Trang kind of put a damper on my travels. (It is now a "Tropical Storm" headed back to Manila).

Yeah, I am flying into that tropical storm going to Manila on Monday afternoon, hope it's passed by then!
