Malaysia - ?s about driving and lodgin in Kuala Selangor and Taman Negara
 

I'm looking at driving to Kuala Selangor for the evening, spending one night there (I suppose at De Palma) and then on to Taman Negara for probably two nights at Mutiara before going back to Kuala Lumpur.

Is this a reasonable itinerary with the best lodging options in each place? I'm planning to self-drive ... roads OK? I'm figuring an hour or so to Kuala Selangor and then I assume 3-4 to Taman Negara and 3 back to Kuala Lumpur. Sound about right?

Malaysian roads are usually excellent, but the same cannot be said of driving habits or signage. (KL and its expressways, in particular, are notoriously confusing.) I'm not sure about your experience level, but a European friend of mine -- who used to drive a taxi for a living and whose idea of a fun holiday is to zip down from Scandinavia and drive around Spain -- found it rather harrowing at times. Don't drive at night if you can help it. Also, large chunks of Taman Negara are only accessible by 4WD or riverboat.

The trunk road between KL (Sg Buluh) and Kuala Selangor is quite winding. I havent used this road for quite a while but do allow 1.5hr to get there.

From my memory there will be plenty of lorries/trucks on these roads and you may need to tail these heavy vehicles for a long distance along the winding road before you find a suitable stretch to overtake. And before long you will be tailing yet another truck ......

We do get very heavy downpours over here (usually late afternoons) and I find driving conditions during heavy rain to be even more hazardous than night time driving. If you have limitted driving experience in this part of the world, it may be a good idea to leave the driving to someone else.

last time i went to kuala selangor the road north from kl was a mess unyil rawang.

why not try drivin out to klang then head north along the coast road?
