We're headed to Koh Tao to dive in December. Thought about Phuket, but heard the coral had been damaged by the tsunami...even though the hotel areas have ben rebuilt already. Also...Koh Tao looks to be 1/3 the price for a 2 tank day trip (1000 TB) from a PADI 5 star facility. We'll try Phuket next time. We'll also spend a couple of nites in Koh Samui...we know it's a busier scene...but we should check it out once to see if it's worth coming back for.

BTW...there IS diving in Singapore. At Underwaterworld, certified divers can "walk" through the giant aquarium tanks with a guide and try not to trip over sleeping nurse sharks and dodge flying manta rays. :p

or

2. Fly from Phuket to BKK last flight and just try to find a way to stay in the airport (we have access to *A lounges) until early morning---or will the entire luggage/boarding pass thing pose too much of a problem.

Is there a good airport hotel, or is it worth going back to the Conrad?

Thank you for the good info.

On your way home from Hawaii with an overnight transit in SFO....
Would you rather catch the last flight into SFO stay and a garbage airport hotel, and wake up early to catch a flight?

or

After a great stay in Hawaii, give up you last of many afternoon's so you could catch a flight to SFO, arrive and drive 20-30 into the city for an 8pm dinner before retiring in luxury the Mark Hopkins for a few zzzzz's and then wake up early to catch a flight?

Maybe, you get 30 more minutes of sleep if you stay at the Amari at BKK. Depending on what your paying at the Conrad it may even be cheaper. And don't forget your not limited to the Conrad.

Regards,

Scho

If you haven't already found it, check out scubaboard.com for great advice about diving (it's the flyertalk of diving ...). There is also a Lonely Planet guide to scuba diving in Thailand.

Having lived in Toronto and New York, I agree with the comparison that BKK is NYC, SIN is Toronto (but I enjoyed both). I loved the Conrad in BKK (close to the elevated metro), but wasn't impressed with the Conrad in SIN. I preferred SIN as a shopping pitstop - there seem to be a wider range of sizes and styles than either BKK or HKG (I'm fairly tall and even though I wear a 4 or 6 in the US, I have a hard time fitting into clothes offered in BKK or HKG, no problems in SIN; also SIN is shoe-shopping heaven for women). I didn't have a single bad meal during my short stay in SIN. Great food in BKK, too. I agree with those who say try both.

I came back last week from 5 days there, and still have fun wandering around the Pratunam Market, the Chatuchak Market, the Lumphini Market (Did I mention SHOPPING), and even went back to the river to see the Grand Palace for the first time in 4 visits.

This is always a personal choice issue. As the other posts say, going to SIN is like visiting a squaky clean, modern metropolis. BKK is just more exotic and more faceted (just one man's opinion)

what????   :p :p

We just came back from HKK - BKK - SIN.

I liked BKK best, IMO SIN is a european city and too expensive.

Bangkok anytime again...

I like BKK too, but I think you didn't go to the right places in SIN...

Might be... and also the rain all the time didn't help to like SIN. May be I should give it another try?
