Sightseeing in Dhaka

greetings,

I am entertaining the idea of going to Dubai in December, with a stopover in Dhaka. Even though I probably will only have a zero % chance of executing this trip, could anyone tell me what there is to see in Dhaka, and if it is easy to get around during the early part of that month? it would only be for a short stay...speaking of stays, which are the western hotel chains available there?

Thanks

You're kidding right?

I go to Dhaka regulary for work. It is the worst place on the planet. You may be the first tourist they have ever seen. If you choose to leave the hotel compound (we stay at the Pan Pacific with the NGO and Aid workers), you will be assualted by children who's parents have cut off their hands to make them better beggars. There is no respite, should you get in a car or bus, they will knock on the windows.

I cannot be anymore bold in suggesting you rethink going to Dhaka.

I just read an article in the IHT saying they have a new shopping mall there that is the largest in South Asia. I'm staying in a hotel right now that is supposed to be in the largest mall in Asia (Oriental Plaza in Beijing) and it is pretty fun, so I would expect you could find some fun at the largest mall in South Asia.
