Nagoya Japan
With the current double miles offer on UA to Nagoya and the fact that Nagoya is an efare coming up, I booked tickets to Nagoya. I love to just take in the culture of where I go, but an asking are there specific tourist items in Nagoya to see/experience?

umm, the World's Expo, for starters?

www.frommers.com is a good online resource--just look up Nagoya in there for the main sites. A bit further afield, there's Cormorant Fishing at Inuyama and Gifu. Nagoya is also a good starting point for heading into to the Japanese Alps, or you could visit Tsumago (old post town on the middle road to Tokyo -- the Nakasendo) and carry on to the fine castle town of Matsumoto. Just Google for any of these names.

If he's going soon, I think the cormorant fishing is in the summer? If you decide to do the hike between Magome and Tsumago, make sure you don't do it the way we did which was mostly uphill. Doing it the other way (especially if you take the bus to the upper village), it's a lot easier.
The problem is, I don't remember which way was the right way. |

I think Kyoto is pretty close to Nagoya. About a one or two hour train ride.

The right way is to take the bus from the train station closest to Nagoya and (if you want to minimize the uphill part), get off at the upper parking lot/end of the line. We found this village to be way more touristy than the "Quirky Japan Web Page" led us to believe, although it is a pedestrian walkway. At the other end (Magome?), you have to take a taxi to the train station for about Y1500. Trains do not run very often on this route, so plan ahead. |
