Riverside restaurants in Bangkok
Hi everyone,
I found the very informative 'bangkok eating' thread but have another question. I will be in Bangkok November 26 during Loy Kratong Festival. (Loy Kratong festival is held during full moon in November. People make a kratong, a container made of banana leaves in the shape of a lotus with a candle and incense sticks in the middle of it and float it down the river.) I'll be having dinner with a friend and it would be great to be near the river to be able to see it. In the above thread I found one positive recommendation for Supatra Riverhouse and less than positive comments about Sala Rin Nam. Does anyone have any other recommendations for good Thai food by the river? Thanks! |

Chiang Mai and the Ping River might also be an option, the Riverside and the aptly named Good View are quite nice. |
I ate at this restaurant last month. The food was fantastic. The environment was serene and sublime. Service, as you can imagine, was very gracious and attentive. For two people, our three course meal came to only $40!! Highly recommended.
http://bangkok.peninsula.com/pbk/dining_07.html I had went to the dinner show at The Oriental: http://www.mandarinoriental.com/hotel/510000238.asp A bit touristy. The food was good, though a few of my courses could have been served more warm. My two night stay at The Oriental was virtually flawless and I am looking very forward to returning to this wonderful property. |
Also for your reference, the Thai restaurant at the Peninsula (called Thiptara) is open-air (parts of it are under thatched roofs) and riverside tables are about as close to the river as you can get.
The Thai restaurant at The Oriental (Sala Rim Naam) is glassed in and is also right on the river. Even though The Oriental is across the river from The Peninsula, both their Thai restaurants are on the same side of the river (the Thonburi side). By far, I prefer the former for ambience. Food at both is so-so (very bland and "Western"-ized). If only for food alone, I would choose neither. The latter is also very touristy (busloads of people) and the show is nothing to shout about, IMHO. If you choose Thiptara, make sure to call ahead (like, now :)) and get a riverside table. They have quite a few of those. |
Thanks people!
If the food is not very good in any of the riverside restaurants I think we might go for dinner elsewhere and then have a drink in the Peninsula river bar (http://bangkok.peninsula.com/pbk/dining_08.html). |
I found this page on riverside dining.

Supatra Riverhouse worth a visit !!!!!
Won't dissappoint with the taste of the food, the ambience, and the service. That's the best choice for entertaining visitors from the other countries for Thais.
More expensive than Samsen Soi 3, of courses !!!! Dine at Supatra in Thai Baht devided by 40, and that the price in US$ which consider very cheap eating by the river with that kind of atmosphere and service. The most important, you don't have to give 15% tip!!!!!!!!!! ^ |

How about Thai food on the river?
http://www.manohracruises.com/ I tried it a few years ago and I think I paid 1000B per person. There are only 4-6 tables IIRC on the entire boat making it very cosy. I entertained a party of four and I thought I could not have spent the evening in a better place. |

Here's another one, although the Manohra one looks better.
