Interline Connection at NRT - how to check luggage?

Hi everyone,

I plan on travelling in October to SFO to NRT to PUS (Pusan, South Korea) and back to SFO via NRT. I plan on purchasing the SFO - NRT roundtrip because there seem to be some good fares available right now, and then using a One World reward on JAL for the NRT - PUS leg.

My concern is connecting on the return, I'm looking at:

JL958 which arrives at NRT at 3:40pm and UA 838 which departs NRT for SFO at 5:55 pm.

If I don't have checked luggage, I'm guessing I won't need special arrangement to use the transfer counters and make the connection without clearing immigration?

BUT, if I have checked bags, can they be checked from Pusan all the way through to SFO on the two carriers? How would I request this? (I've never done this before! :( )

Welcome to FT caliboy888 :)

JAL and UA operate from different terminals at NRT so you will need to either clear customs and immigration or else transfer airside between terminals.

As long as JAL and UA have an interline agreement you should be able to check bags all the way through from departure point (just tell check-in agent want bags checked right through). They do this sort of thing all the time.
