Well, if your'e looking for good, but inexpensive, try the
Soup Dragon
just north of the Old Market (I'm not sure the "street" has a name. Phone: 063 964 933)

I ate the Pho Bo 4 mornings in a row, just changing the proportion of condiments, including Thai basil and some kind of leaf I couldn't identify (not dope). It was 2500Riels or USD 0.65. (Ok, I liked it a lot.) Served with tea. Avoid the coffee.

Good pastries, too. We loaded up before our share taxi to the border.

For dinner, try the claypot fish with peppers alongwith the stir fried morning glory. Maybe US$4. Get there before 1930 and it's happy hour. You can get enough Tiger beer for a couple of dollars to give yourself a fair sized hangover, I understand from a good friend.

On Wat Bo road. East of the river near the intersection with Highway 6 is the
Chivit Thai, which specializes in, you guessed it, Thai food. Phone (012) 830761.

I splurged on the fish hor mok, steamed with a coconut sauce for $3.50. A side order of stir fried water cabbage was $2. Good, good, good.

Just ok was a large bottle of the local Angkor beer, which gives swill a run for the money. It didn't keep me from drinking it, though, more than once.

Not as good as Soup Dragon, but ok if you like Thai food is the nearby Dead Fish, one street north of the old Market.

Figure US$4-5 for a full meal including Angkor swill, err, I mean, beer.

I had the steamed fish, mixed veg (though I ordered fried morning glory), and rice. The fish had an interesting presentation, served in a coconut. Neat.

Very quiet in mid January, though it was peak tourist season. I guess everyone was eating at the Sofitel or similar. Don't worry about booking, just slide in. After dinner you can whip across the street to the Angkor What? bar for more beer. Try Tiger for something decent.
