Dusit Thani
 

At the end of a long mileage run in coach I'd like to reward myself with a stay at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Bangkok. I've heard the hotel is nice. Can anyone tell me if its worth $120/night? I've seen posts recommend other nice hotels that are $35/night and I wonder if there's a big difference in quality?

Dusit Thani's biggest selling point is its location -- as central as you can get, at the junction of Silom and Rama IV, next to both Skytrain and (starting next year) subway stations. Service is still at a high Thai standard, but the building is getting on in the years and it's no longer even close to the swankiest place in town.

other than the Oriental, what would be considered Bangkoks nicest hotels?

The Peninsula was just rated the #1 hotel in the world by Travel & Leisure. After that, the top hotels include the Oriental, Shangri-La, and Regent. Some other favorites of people are the Conrad, Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit, Westin Grand Sukhumvit, JW Marriott, Banyan Tree, and the Hyatt Erawan. I am headed to Bangkok in a couple of weeks and scored a room at the Shangri-La on priceline for $55. It used to be the only riverside 5* so you knew you had to win it when you bid. However, Banyan Tree has now started selling via priceline in this same category and area so you can end up there when you bid too. Its an all-suite hotel and it supposed to fantastic as well. Other than that, you can get rooms for around $100 at the Conrad, which is less than a year old. I am staying there as well, supposed to be very modern thai and great too, and has one of most popular bars in town. Oh, and an outpost of London's Metropolitan hotel just opened in Bangkok last month, also supposed to be fantastic and very fasionable.

The Peninsula is hard to beat. I didn't stay there, but saw a room. Also the Royal Orchard Sheraton is nice and I think that there's a Shangri La that's nice as well. Try looking at www.asiatravel.com. They have some great hotel deals. Of course, Priceline might give you some good options as well

Thailand has wonderful hotels. I loved the jw marriott which was the best hotel i've ever stayed in. And one of the sheratons gets better reviews.

having done a couple of trips to bkk in coach, i can appreciate the need for a nice hotel when you arrive.

my reco would be the peninsula. it is (according to T&L, at least) the number one hotel in the world, and it is amazing. we paid around 120 the first time and 160/night the second time there. i can't say enough about it - defintely worth the extra money.

AND - i'm not sure about 'nice' hotels at $35/night in bkk. sure, you can get deals, but we also tried le meridien there ($85) and it was very worn out.

Gotta love the Nana Hotel at 1,000 baht.

Try www.luxurylink.com for Dusit Thani. It's often at auction at really good rates for suites with meals and lounge access included.

While the Nana is a long way from being a luxury hotel, the atmosphere there is priceless! Also, if you book through their travel agency, Nana Tour, you get the room for 850 baht.

Try Priceline HK site and have a 4 or 5-star hotel like Marriott hotel for US$50.
