Bangkok Hotels

I will spend a few days in BKK with friends in November. We've all been to BKK before so will not do too much of sightseeing, maybe some. Can anyone rate Peninsula, Grand Sheraton Sukhumvit, and Banyan Tree? Which of the three is the best? The prices are/facilities are comaparable. I've stayed at The Oriental once. It was great but I would stay at another hotel this time and a newer one. Thanks!

If price is any consideration at all, you might consider using Priceline Hong Kong to get the JW Marriott Sukhumvit. I honestly don't know if it's in the same league as the three hotels you mentioned, but it is rated 5* and I thought it was one of the finest hotels I ever stayed at. I got it twice for HK$435 (US$56) + tax & service and several others have reported winning bids below this (as low as HK$380, US$49). At these prices, it's a true bargain and they treat you the same as guest paying rack rate (Fruit basket and cookies with personal note from the manager in the room, extremely lenient late checkout, etc.)

It is a nice hotel, but is not located on the river. I would stay on or near the river as most tourist activities center on/near the river. I personally also preferred the coolness of the river over the sometimes gritty stifling inner city of BKK.

To find lots of feedback on the Sheraton, go to the Flyertalk Milesbuzz forum and do a search for this property under the Starwood section.

I like the Marriott Resort on the river. Kind of it's own oasis.

My wife and I stayed at the Peninsula a couple of months ago. It was a very nice hotel. It was just rated by one of the travel magazines (possibly Travel & Leisure) as the #2 hotel in the world. I wouldn't put it that high but it was very, very nice. And it was only about $150 USD, which, in my mind, was a tremendous value.

I don't know about the others but if you try some searches, you'll definitely find plenty of info. Before I left for BKK, I had about a one-inch thick stack of print outs from Flyertalk (which I made my wife read during the flight over).

I LOVE the Peninsula in BKK! It was certainly the best hotel in which I had ever stayed and have no desire for more luxury than they offered (if such a place even exists!).

A coworker stayed at the one in HKG and at the one in BKK, and he preferred the one in BKK.

Thanks for all the comments. We ended up staying at The Peninsula and got upgraded to a suite (thanks to my LHW Leaders Club membership). Suite rates included breakfast served in the room - very nice. All the comments about the excellent service and first class facilities are true, but unless you plan to spend a lot of time in the hotel and take advantage of all that service/facilities...my preference in BKK remains Royal Orchid Sheraton. It is on the RIGHT side of the river, the facilities are adequate and price/value ratio is better in my opinion. I still haven't checked out the Grande Sheraton Sukhumvit...

HKG Peninsula is several notches above the BKK Pen ... there really is no comparison (or accounting for tastes, apparently).
