Best Mid-Range Resort in Maldives?

Hey guys, my first post on here so hello to everyone and thank you all for your contributions and advice!

My wife and I are planning to travel (with our two year old son) to the Maldives soon and had a list of mid-price resorts we're looking to stay at. Which do yall recommend? Most important thing is breakfast/food and the rooms. We wish to stay on a beach villa as opposed to an on-water villa.

Conrad Maldives Rangali
Six Senses Laamu
Pullman Maldives All-Inclusive
Fairmont Maldives - Sirru Fen Fushi
Jumeirah Maldives Olhahali Island
Niyama Private Islands Maldives
COMO Maalifushi
JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa
Baglioni Resort Maldives
Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences

Hi texastraveler,

Welcome to Flyertalk! You have posted in the luxury hotels and travel forum but are not asking about luxury hotels. The proper place for this sort of question would be in the geographic forum for the Maldives, which I guess would be the general Asia forum. Normally I'd move this thread directly there but there isn't much there about the Maldives. So for a couple of days before moving it, I'll leave the thread here to see if folks from this forum have any comment since some of the hotels you mention might be considered luxury.

Out of those mentioned I would choose COMO Maalifushi in an instant if you don't mind taking a seaplane. Been there with a one-year old.

COMO Maalifushi is lovely but watch out for beach erosion on one side

Conrad just did a massive refurb - wouldn't normally have recommended it, but with the revamped villas look quite nice, so worth checking out
Hilton Amingiri also just opened up and looks nice

Six Senses is quite nice overall, but difficult to get to - have stayed here, although years ago now.

I'm pleased to see you'd prefer a beach villa, though I guess you might have your son's safety in mind rather than the environmental and aesthetic damage the Overwater Villas create. If it's only food and the room that are uppermost in your priorities I wonder why you are prepared to travel so far. The Maldives are a fairly inconvenient place to visit and once on your sandbar you might find it a little claustrophobic and limited. Until recently - well, about 10 years ago - the only reason people went to the Maldives was to dive and snorkel the reefs, which is why we went. Now it's all about private pools and spa facilities.

In my opinion, places like the Seychelles and South Pacific islands have infinitely greater appeal.

I think we've had about as much response as we are going to get here in the Luxury hotel forum now so I am moving it to the Asia forum where it may get additional responses.

hi, ive actually been to Conrad Rangali, Six Senses, Maalifushi and Amilla over the past year or year and a half, all for 7 nights or more. i would not say these are mid range properties. theyre probably second tier to highest, only surpassed by the likes of soneva, velaa, joali, etc. i will be visiting jumeirah in march - i have high hopes.

i think each property on your list has something totally different to offer and is generally good. the only property that i totally disliked was COMO Maalifushi (their sister property, COMO Cocoa Island is much better). beaches are very poor and when we were there, the water was not blue. more like black with coral rubble literally everywhere. we disliked it so much we left early. it was just a sad place overall that i have a hard time recommending with so many other amazing properties on your list.

amilla is probably the best run property of all the ones on your list (that ive been to) - GM is really amazing and the team is great. villas are lovely and modern, however the island is not super picturesque and the beaches are not the best ive seen. food is excellent and varies, and the dine around HB is at true dine around with really no restrictions or surcharges for specific restaurants. breakfast is out of this world here. beach villas are the best room category by far.

conrad is the prettiest island on your list IMO (lagoon is simply amazing). i will say that at minimum you will need to book a deluxe beach villa as the entry level villas are semi detached, not very private, and lack wow factor. we stayed in a grand WV which i realize yoiu might not be interested in, however they were wonderful with so much glass everywhere. food at the a la carte restaurants was divine (plus u have the added bonus of ithaa). breakfast on the other hand... really bad. very mass market, huge buffet with poor quality and lots of options. we had breakfast at vilu every morning since it was a la carte and much better, but i am not sure if kids are allowed there.

six senses is quintessental maldives when it comes to architecture and the ocean beach villas with pool are my favorite villas ive experienced to date of the 20 odd islands ive been to. impeccably designed, super private, and just overall an amazing room. my one gripe with SSL is that management is very much so so, and there is far too much seagrass everywhere. the island used to be very pretty several years ago, and it still is, but the lagoon has lost many of the wonderful shades of blue since they are overrun by seagrass now. management is reluctant to remove it due to environmental reasons. food was very good (leaf = amazing), and the snorkeling here in terms of hard coral is by far the best on your list of places ive been to.

overall i would go back to any of these except Maalifushi.

We are going to Amilla in August 2023. Currently they have a few promotions if you book direct on their website.
Upgrade to Halfboard for free and 30% off on all villas & residences. In my opinion, All-inclussive options in Maldives are the best - takes the hassle of paying for meals out of your mind for the whole trip!

We have previously stayed in Finolou, Dhighali, Constance Halaveli, Ozen Atomsphere. This time around, i had booked at the Ritz Carlton on points for 7 days but am going to cancel because you cant get all-inclussive option w point redemption.

Niyama was the other resort we looked at this time around but their rooms seem a bit dated.

rvlcr great pictures of Amilla. We are staying at Reef Pool Water Villa at the Amilla. Any recommendations on villa numbers?

Yes these are not mid range hotels. Mid range hotels are lower priced than these.

Honeymooned at Pullman and absolutely loved it. We stayed in an overwater but their beach villas looked phenomenal, very private despite backing on to the beach, and in a better location for most dining. Also some of the best things I saw snorkeling were out that side of the island.
The inclusions are just top notch but you will want to book EVERYTHING as soon as you get there. We did night snorkeling and it was great, was an add on but ended up being a private tour.
I’ll spare you the million photos but it was the best week of my life! If you want to talk more about it feel free to DM.

I would recommend Niyama Anantara resort. Has a children center/day care option. Lots of good food options too. Breakfast is amazing. The negative is a longer seaplane ride to reach it.

I stayed at the sunrise overwater villa, sunset overwater villa, and as well as the beach villas. I would recommend the sunrise villas, followed by beach villas, and then followed by the sunset villas. The sunrise villas have unobstructed views of the sea, while the sunset ones has rock jetty views. The beach villas were nice, and had an awesome swing. I would recommend splitting your time between the sunrise overwater villas and the beach villas.

Did you go? Can you share your thoughts please on Jumeirah Olhahali (former LUX property?). Jumeirah must have swapped hotels quite recently as I remember they had other name in Maldives. Could not find any reviews on FT of this property and seriously considering it for winter holidays with kids. Beach villa with pool looks good. I have narrowed down to The Nautilus vs Jumeirah. I was already at: Conrad, Waldorf, O&O RR, FSKH, FSLG. Nautilus appeals to me more snorkeling wise off the beach, it does appeal less price wise (almost x2 Jumeirah) and seaplane. The problem with seaplane is that the latest departure from the island would have to be 4pm (followed by 7-8 hours at MLE airport...). Given a lot of international flights out are at night (Emirates, Turkish, Qatar) a hotel with boat transfers make more sense. Last time I had departure from MLE at 11pm and left Waldorf at 9pm (was able to stay in the villa the whole time). Apparently snorkeling off the beach is not bad either at Olhahali?

Try Ozen Maadhoo. Have beach villas with pool and an underwater restaurant and lots of things for kids too. Also Ozen Bolifuhsi. Both has beach pool villas and also by boat in Male Atoll.

Thanks for the recommendation but AI is just not my thing. I neither drink, nor do I, or my kids, eat much, so would prefer quality over quantity :)
