Hotels in Phnom Penh

im taking a trip to Phnom Penh in the spring and have noticed no large hotel chains have hotels there. There must be a good reason for this. But whatever the reason is, it’s hard for me to figure out which hotel is the best one or what area is the best to choose?

Does anyone have any any hotel recommendations for a US traveler in Phnom Penh?

I have stayed at the iRoHa Garden Hotel & Resort and found it to be very nice. However, don't let the name fool you. It's no resort!!!!

Here is the review I wrote last year on it

The Sofitel and the Royal (Raffles) are very nice.
In the heart of downtown (200m from national museum and Royal palace), I like also the Amanjaya Pancam.

The Rosewood is far and away the best.

I want to be close to NagaWorld entertainment complex. Last night I booked Queen Grand Boutique Hotel & Spa. Has decent reviews but was wondering if anyone has other specific recommendations near that area.

I looked at Sofitel and Raffles, but with so many other good properties at $60-100 a night, it seems like a waste of money to spend $200-250 night just for a name.

They are not just a name but top quality hotels. But there are of course cheaper alternatives and if they fit your needs, that's perfectly fine. The Sofitel is not far for this complex, and is usually cheaper than 200-250$. But this could indeed be the price for your dates.

What I just found so odd was the abundance of independent hotels. if people could recommend, or give a quick review of some of the independent hotels there please let me know.

Sofitel wants $200 and Raffles wants $278 a night during my dates.

What I still don’t understand is why there are no Hiltons, IHG, Marriott, or any other American properties in a capital city? Even China in 2nd and 3rd tier cities have American hotel chains. Is there any reason why american hotel chains stay out of Cambodia?

Can anyone recommend a good hotel near Nagaworld they have stayed at?

There is an Intercontinental on the road to PNH airport (not a nice location IMO)
In Siem Reap, there is a very nice Park Hyatt. A (ugly) Méridien as well.
I heard also that an Intercontinental was under construction in Sihanoukville.

So American chains are present in Cambodia.

The IC has been deflagged and is now 'The Royal Duke' or something of the like. There is a CY by Marriott opening Dec/Jan around the 240/63 intersection. Parents stayed at White Mansion a year ago and it was good. The latter two are within walking distance of Naga (though not a place I'd ever set foot in.... Naga that is).

I stayed at the plantation urban resort. Was a good location, and more then fine for me. Not amazing luxury, just solid, and great helpful staff.

Does anyone know about the hotel I booked above? The Queen Grand Boutique Hotel & Spa.

I’m a gambler at heart, so I figured why not be close to the casino? Obviously open to staying anywhere, but thought it a good place to start.

Some first hand accounts of these “5 Star” hotels that are $50-80 a night would be nice for those that have stayed in Phnom Penh.

Does anyone have any first hand experiences with these independent $50-80 a night 5 star hotels (according to TripAdvisor) that they can share first hand? I’m curious for specific hotel recommendations in Phnom Penh regardless of location. Any first hand accounts of some cheap hotels that have terrific reviews would be nice.

FWIW I’m completely ignorant as to where one should stay in Phnom Penh, or what one should see or do.
