It seems to me that on arrival, you do it instead of immigration. I believe upon arrival, at the immigration stations, you go to the special immigration desk for e-gate applications. They handle you there, and when you are done, you are sent on to baggage claim.

I am a NEXUS holder and just scheduled an appt upon arrival at TPE (on CX) in January 2018. The website works just fine now- registration, submission of infos and payment, and preliminary approval to schedule an interview.

Let us know if it works as the program is supposed to be for GlobalEntry holders, not NEXUS holders. Even though the work the same for the US TSA, they are different programs and require separate applications.

Do it on arrival, and complete the arrival card (electronic version) before your interview. Then you can use e-gate immediately for that arrival AND your later departure from Taiwan.

When I filled out my application on the eGate website they asked for either Global Entry or Nexus info. So it must cover both.

I completed the electronic arrival card and my interview was on my departure. I was approved for e-gate and when I tried to use the e-gate, it required me to fill out an arrival card. According to staff, they said when I filled out the electronic arrival card it was not tied to my e-gate info, so I had to submit it again.

Note: Security at Taoyuan Airport was a minimum 40 minute wait. E-gate still requires you to go through the regular security lines. APEC Business Travel Card line had no wait at all since they utilize the diplomat or crew line. I used APEC Business Travel Card to breeze through the security and e-gate to breeze through immigration clearance as there was a line for the APEC.

So it sounds like I might not be able to use eGate upon my arrival in Taiwan the first time? I'll keep the appointment, and I'll report back to the group. Not that it's a matched comparison, but when Mrs. Majuki signed up for eGate with her current passport (ROC), they corralled her to the eGates when she tried to use the manual lanes with me the last time we were in Taiwan 3 years ago.

Well, at least from the arrival perspective there is no screening; you aren't saving much time when you already have APEC card....

Be aware that it is still kind of new to the officers at TPE immigration. Just head to the e-gate application counter and ask for e-gate interview for G.E. card holder. Once the electronic arrival form is filled and register on their end, you can use the e-gate immediately and skip the normal immigration line.
I would be curious to see any exception for that (maybe fail in both facial recognition and fingerprints?)

Yeah, I'm hoping in 3 weeks that a few more people will have signed up for it. I'll give a report once I'm landside. I'll be sure to fill out the electronic arrival card beforehand.

The e-gate staff told me if you have APEC already, you don't need e-gate. I had already paid for the application so they went ahead and processed my application. You aren't saving much time on arrival but you do get to avoid having to deal with an immigration officer altogether.

I also interviewed on departure and had the same experience. The explanation (although not that clear because none of the NIA staffers spoke good English) is that approving my passport for e-gate 'cleared' the information in the NIA system from my original arrival card, so the system did not recognize that I was legally in the country. I inferred from their statements that they consider this a bug and will look to fix it, but again hard to tell because of poor communication.

For those who are planning on interviewing on departure, I wonder if submitting the online arrival card before the interview would help (the NIA staff told me to input my outbound flight information) so as to avoid the hassle of filling it out during the process (I literally submitted the online arrival card on my phone while standing with NIA staff in front of the e-gates). Of course, there's still the chance that the the information gets 'disassociated' during the e-gate approval process.

Just as a general warning, the interview/approval process is clearly not ready for prime time. I don't know if I interviewed before hsumh316, but the process took nearly one hour from the time I arrived at the NIA counter in T2 (including waiting ~10 mins in line and then another ~15mins just for the NIA staff member conducting the interview to show up), so make sure to budget plenty of time if you're planning on doing the interview on departure.

I had my interview on arrival yesterday (Dec 9). I gave them my passport and Nexus card and they took me to a small interview room where they talked me through 5 or so questions. E.g. Have you denied entry to any country..., etc. it took just a few minutes. Then they printed off the form (I believe with the questions on it) and asked me to sign it. They had me fill in the electronic arrival form in the office and did a facial scan with a camera and we were done.

The problem came after. They took me to the eGate machine where they showed me how to place the passport in the machine. They emphasized that one must only put in one passport page otherwise it wouldn’t scan. It failed to scan. They tried multiple machines. One page only and open with multiple pages. Failed every time. After @ half hour I had the original intervewer and 4-5 others including system programmers helping and never made it work. They were very nice, but couldn’t figure out a solution.

They told old me there were other America passports that didn’t work. So... a mixed bag. Hopefully they’ll figure out a solution soon.

By they way way I asked how many GE folks had applied and they said around 10.

1) So the people on arrival knew what to do it seems. This was Terminal 1 or 2? I'm planning to arrive on an early flight.

2) I'm wondering if it has to do with the initial use of the electronic arrival card, but it should have worked since you completed it after you were enrolled in the eGate.
