After 6 nights in Ubud, we spent our last 2 nights relaxing at the Grand Hyatt. One afternoon, we decided to go to lunch in Kuta. Big mistake. Kuta is the armpit of Bali. It's like a bad Hollywood movie set. Small beaches (unlike Nusa Dua), that appeared dirty. Lots of chain hotels. Very congested. We kept hearing this is the favorite destination of Australians that like to party, and it looked it. We ate adjacent to the Market when we arrived. It was a 30 minute Uber ride from the Hyatt, and about $5.00 USD. We ate. We walked. We high-tailed it back to the Hyatt. We should have gone somewhere else, or better yet, we should have gone to the nice outdoor mall next to the Hyatt. There were lots of places to eat.
By the way, the Grand Hyatt is roughly $145 USD. If you have any status with Hyatt, the lounge offered an exceptional breakfast and dinner.

You're probably putting too much thought into this
Essentially, Kuta's a bit of a dump (but fun at times), and the Legian end of it is truly ghastly. Seminyak is one of the nicest mainstream bits: busy but with pockets of calm. The big names south of the airport seems to specialise in Disney comes to Bali resorts: some people love them.
I'd go for Seminyak on a first visit. Plenty of everything within reach, and some touches of class thrown in.

EDIT : Ok, wikivoyage seems to indicate my confusion is normal, "Development has occurred at an astonishing pace, and as well as absorbing all green space which formerly separated Seminyak from Legian, it is now almost impossible to determine where Seminyak ends"

I'm having a similar internal debate. With our 2 teens and youngest child, we (American) are 5 nights in Ubud in a lovely classic villa: Balinese architecture and furnishing, etc. We have 2 nights to finish out our week in Bali (prev week in Tokyo and next stop HKG). Originally I booked Emerald Villas in Sanur for those 2 nights b/c we like local culture and food (but wanted a beach). But now I'm thinking of canceling that and doing the Grand Hyatt b/c I will no doubt need a break from all the planning and corralling. The thought of having access to the club lounge (I'd splurge for two club rooms b/c have loads of points), more modern facilites, drinks whilst lounging at the beach/pool. That sounds like heaven.
But the Disney factor. I'm having a hard time getting past that. Do the restaurants have local cuisine? Is the architecture Balinese (modern?)? Will we feel at all like we are in Bali?

Pardon me, but I don't know anything at all about Bali. Looking at a map, Seminyak is about 1 mile up from Legian on the same beach. Is that right? When you say the places are dumpy or classy, are you talking about the beach or the city?
