Overnight layover in TPE - hotel options?
Friend is getting away from the volcano situation in Bali. Flight on EVA from Bali to TPE. 12 hour layover, connecting to United to SFO. He would prefer not to exit the airport at all if possible- are there hotels he can overnight in within the terminal? Or does he need to exit immigration and then come back through? Any advice would be helpful.

While UA does use TPE, your question is more appropriate for Asia Destination forum where there are multiple threads discussing TPE hotels. Will move this thread there.

There is a very nice Novotel about 2km from the airport, basically on the airport grounds. But you will need to leave the terminal to get to the hotel and take a 5 minute shuttle ride from/to Terminal 2 (United's terminal). Leave enough time for clearing security/immigration as it can be busy around the time UA's flight departs and there is no premier line.

Thank you! Any idea of his bags will get checked through if it's on one ticket? Or will he need to claim them before exiting?

With the Taoyuan Metro in operation now, there are plenty of hotels in Taipei city that your friend can access. It's approximately 40 minutes from both terminals to Taipei Main Station.

Yes DPS-TPE on BR and TPE-SFO on UA. Seems there are no hotels airside. He's super skittish and not well traveled. Would sleeping overnight in the airport be possible just in the general waiting areas?

agree with the advice about Novotel. Best airport stay in taoyuan. And it's literally five minutes by their free shuttle

http://www.novoteltaipeiairport.com/tw/ is the hotel and it actually has its own Airport Metro stop. Apparently, there are some places throughout the terminals that people can sleep: https://travel.ettoday.net/article/5...96%93%E3%80%8D
There is/was an air-side hotel at T2: https://www.plaza-network.com/locati...rt&city=Taipei I would think BR at DPS should let your friend check the bag to TPE but only do so if your friend will enter Taiwan. |
I stay at the Novotel extensively, and it's the best option for this itinerary if the 12hrs are overnight vs daytime. If the layover is daytime, store the bags at the airport and head into the city for lunch and exploring.
There are other hotels located in Taoyuan which are both convenient to shopping and eating, and a little nicer, but they require a taxi ride back to the terminal in the morning which can be dicey with traffic depending on the departure time especially given the morning flight bank leads to complete crowd chaos in the terminal from 7A to about 830A, and without APEC, it's risky given there are no special lanes for business class or frequent fliers. I would do the Novotel as the first choice, although it really is becoming a little long in the tooth quality-wise, and the second option is the lower priced but still decent Holiday Inn Express in Taoyuan. |
