Uber in Taiwan

Uber is being suspended in Taiwan next week. What alternatives are there?

Uber still isn't legal in Taiwan...

Uber has always been illegal in Taiwan since Day One. They don't pay up their fines and don't pay proper local taxes. Some new regulations and laws went into effect last month, so our governments can finally suspend those illegal operation. I have no knowledge of any alternative to this illegal form of transportation.

OTOH, MRT, trains, buses and taxis all are easily accessible in Taiwan. Depending on your destination/s, some may work better than others in certain cities.

Uber BLACK will still be in business as an alternative, Taiwan TAXI has app (as do some other Taxi/limo/transport companies)

I used Uber last time I was in Taiwan, and it was very convenient - fast, reasonably priced, and no issues communicating where to go (I do speak Mandarin, but it still is much easier if driver has destination ready on a map).

I tried their taxi and it was ok, but having to grab one at an arbitrary location and then explain where to go is just a bit tedious.

In this case, having Uber available was part of the consideration when booking hotel (not too far from the airport, but there is no reasonable transportation from anywhere to the airport except taxi or Uber). Clearly Uber is illegal - it can't be legal to compete with taxi extortion..ahem...lawful increased fares at the airport, that lacks convenient transportation options :)

- What kind of prices does Uber black charge in TW?
- What taxi apps are there? If I use one - will it also tell the driver where I want to go?

Recently went from Jiannan Station to TPE airport was NT$1,500 ~35 minutes and 46km.

Has anyone used Uber since they returned? I can't seem to find many reports, and want to know how easy it is to find drivers, or if its like some cities on Uber where there may be 5 drivers in the entire city, and you can NEVER get one.

Car availability (in Taipei at least) has improved a lot in the last two months, wait time is usually 5 minutes and rarely exceed 10 minutes. All the cars (UberX) are operated by car rental companies and carry their own commercial passenger insurance (TWD 9M minimum). Non-surge rate is around 20% cheaper than taxi.

One thing to note though, the phone connecting service used by Uber never reliably connect my US number with the driver's, so if you can't find the driver its gonna be a bit annoying.
