Sri Lankan sockets
 

I'm curious about the experience of folks who've been there, say within the past year, and what they've found for sockets in their hotel room?

Do major chain hotels have universal (one size fits all) sockets, British type G ones, three-round-pin South Asian D configuration ... or more than one of the above in the same room!

I understand those are all possible, but am curious as to what folks have actually encountered in hotels there upon arrival.

The majority of hotels will have UK style plugs, most will all have adapters you can pick up at the front desk.

At least one sort of middle level newish hotel in Colombo installed sockets that will take four different plugs without requiring adapters. More typically either British style or the larger round plugs are found.

I travelled around Sri Lanka last Christmas/New Year and was glad I took a three-round-pin plug with me. However, I did not stay in major chain hotels.

IIRC, you can fit a two round pin plug into a three round pin socket, with occasional judicious use of a dry plastic pen top in the earth (top) hole to lift the lock. Those used to wantonly disregarding safety provisions on UK sockets will be very familiar with the procedure.

Obviously, this is an idiotic idea and should not be attempted by anyone. And unnecessary on the vast majority of sockets - I can only think of a couple of guesthouses where I needed to consider, and then thoroughly dismiss the very notion of, doing this.

In Sri Lanka right now and can say that occasionally, you find all 3 British-type plugs (rectangular, "small" round and "big" round in the same room). The contemporary British-style plugs, if they are the only ones in the room, are usually found by the bed side while the round ones are scattered elsewhere.

A few have had the multiple plug sockets but that is generally in new/newly- renovated places.
