Malacca (MKZ) Access
Just wondering if anyone has any info as to when or if scheduled air service between MKZ and both SIN and KUL will ever be restored.
Back in the second half of the 1960s there was a frequent Malaysian Airlines Fokker F27 service plying this route and it was excellent and convenient. |
MKZ ex-townie here.
KUL scheduled service is a lost cause; the north-south highway now gets you from KLIA or KL's southern bus terminal to Melaka Sentral in a bus in 90 mins, and a cab can be faster. SIN is more viable if we're talking about distance, but the business demand isn't there. Throw in high-speed rail plans that might emerge in a few years, and noncompetitive landing rates for the new airport, and I don't think anyone's committed to making scheduled service to either of the two cities. |

I last flew SIN (Paya Lebar) to MKZ in a Malayan Airways DC3 (the scheduled F27 was stuck in Subang) August 1966 and MKZ-KUL Sep 66 as well as some hops in April 67 - long before all the sea reclamation took place and the west side of Tranquerah Road (Jalan Tengkera) actully backed onto the sea! I'd love to go back for old times sakes. Now there's modern hotels but back then it was the Government Rest House for me. I had hoped Firefly might have filled the SIN-MKZ gap now that MKZ is modernised! Back in 1966 when the F27s stopped at MKZ (1966-09-02 specially!) the starboard engine was kept running, supposedly because the airport didn't have an apu! |
