I've heard that you should use Vinasun taxi upon arrival. Any reason to buy taxi coupon first or use pre-arranged transportation?

There's certainly a Mae Lin kiosk (on the far right, I think, as you face the offices).

Back to the airport - if you have VN dong cash and have your hotel/address written down, then no need to buy a coupon. Make sure they start the meter. You have to add the amount of the toll on exist (can't remember - VND5000? VND10000?). If you get into a dispute, just ask the hotel on arrival to deal with it.

Wikitravel has a great writeup actually. A few sources on Google say the exit toll is 10,000 dong. Here is the airport taxi info from WikiTravel. I added some bold to what I thought was important. Taxi Caution: some travellers have reported that taxi scams at the airport are rife. To avoid being scammed, read the information here as well as in the "Get around" section. International terminal There are three options for getting a taxi from the airport to the city centre (District 1): 1.Main taxi queue. The main taxi queue is on your left when you exit through the main door on the ground floor of the terminal building. Some travellers advise that you should head for the taxi queue, ignoring people who approach you offering taxis or advising you to purchase tickets at counters in the airport. It is suggested that you select a green Mai Linh taxi. Apparently, it is not necessary to take the first taxi in the queue. (See the information on taxi companies below.) 2.Mai Linh counter in the terminal building. The Mai Linh taxi company has a counter that is on your right after you clear customs. You can order and pay for a taxi from the staff member there. He will then lead you out of the terminal building to the taxi queue and arrange a Mai Linh taxi for you. As of August 2012, the cost for a single trip from the airport to the city centre was US$10 or 200,000 dong. This fee covers all tolls that may need to be paid by the taxi driver. 3.Taxis at the domestic terminal. There are also taxis at the domestic terminal car park. After leaving the international terminal bulding, turn right and walk about 200 metres. (See the information on the domestic terminal below.) As of July 2012, the metered taxi fare from the airport to the city centre was about 140,000 dong, plus a toll of 10,000 dong. When traffic is lighter (usually only between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am or on a hot Sunday afternoon), the ride to the city centre takes as little as 15 minutes. More typically, however, taxis creep along in near-standstill traffic for up to an hour. |

Compare this to London where somehow I get persuaded to part with large amounts of money in return for very little but at the same time don't feel cheated. Before they built the new terminal, the layout at SGN was much better. Tolls were only paid inward bound. So arriving pax could take a taxi and there was no toll. By the time you leave, you've got the hang of things. Now, there is only a toll on exit. So, take a taxi TO the airport, and the driver might demand the toll (because he will have to pay to get out). And then if he picks someone up, he will get the toll again. VND10,000 is about US$0.50. |
It's a good point about the FX rates. My wife and were having a spirited (but fun on both sides) haggling session with a store vendor. With the exchange, the difference came down to about a $0.50. But, it was a ton of fun and both sides came away happy. ^

Even after decades of travel and a wallet that usually has five different currencies in it, I still get confused and will argue the toss with exchange shops. In Indonesia I like to get close to 10,000+, so we haggle for ages over how much they will give me. I am always being told by family I am turning into a miser because I spend 10 minutes discussing should they give me 50cents or 80cents more. In Vietnam where we all seem to get 20,000+, it is worse, I am sure the locals look at us and shake their heads sometimes, I do think the folks that do not exchange, but use their dollars, miss out on so much fun!

I can't say I know where these two places are off the top of my head:
Thien Hau pagoda Jade Buddha But everything above that can easily be done in a day, even walking in between them. Cu Chi tunnels I never actually made it to, but I know that there is travel involved - but I'd definitely go with other suggestions and book that in for the second day. |
