Affordable hotels in Rangoon

The hotel prices in Burma seem to be crazy and I wonder whether anyone has experience of staying in some of the cheaper Rangoon hotels, such as the Panda | Clover | Thamada | Orchid | Alfa | East | Royal White Elephant | Hotel 63 etc.

Also, how does one get around in Rangoon from one place to another? Do they have some equivalent of tuk-tuks?

Thanks for any useful info.

There is already a thread on FT for RGN hotels. I stayed at the Kandawgyi Palace Hotel Yangon last week and found it to be OK, although not your usual 4* place. The breakfast was pretty good, though.
I got a decent rate through a negotiator (weg.de in my case) and after rebates paid ~$50/night. Most 'better' hotels are Government-owned/operated and rather expensive.

The rather expensive comment is true but they are not government owned and operated. They are nearly all owned by foreign groups eg Traders, Governors Residence, Inya Lake, Sedona, The Strand

I stayed at Motherland 2 twice this past winter as I bobbed in and out of Yangon. Paid 18U$/night, loved the place, the ambiance, and the flashpacker vibe.
