Is a trip to the Maldives a good use of points?
Me and my wife are thinking that next year a trip to the Maldives (from the southern US) ~February would be a good vacation. It looks like you could fly *A for 240k continental points in business class, and stay at the hilton for 8 nights for 400k pts, this is alot, but is doable with just credit card sign up bonus's and a little spend for us. For those that have been there is this a good use of points? Is there a better vacation for people who like "beach resort" type vacations?
On another note, how much do you expect we would spend out of pocket in 8 nights there, it wouldn't be over 3k would it? |

The Maldives are an Islamic state, so you can't bring alcohol in, and the drinks were about $25 each. If you guys don't drink, it wouldn't be too expensive. It was probably ~$30 each per meal at the restaurants at the resort. I don't know what the Hilton property looks like, but the only options for eating were the three restaurants at the resort because the resort is the only thing on the island! It was amazing, I am still happy that we went there. It is only 8 ft above sea level, so it isn't going to be around forever, might as well go while you still can! |

All-in-all, my take on resort spots is the food ends up being SO expensive that it's worth looking to see if there is a half/full-board package available for the resort. I've found that this is a better way to pay, rather than points. May not be true for the W Maldives, though... |
