CUNG TAILOR, near Wat Phnom

Any experiences / recommendations for a tailor there ? Thank you.

Yes, there are good tailors in PNH. I have tried Angkor Independent tailor with good success for men's pants and shirts.

As a woman, I go regularly to Cung Tailor near Wat Phnom. This amazing VIetnamese (frenc speaking) tailor is the best around and competes with taklors 7 times more expensive in Bangkok. He and his seamstresses work out of his incredibly messy row house. I happen to love the chaos and marvel over how he keeps track of everything, no shirt usually and graying aging eyes.

Prices have gone up a bit, I used to pay $10 for a dress, $7 for pants. But when i come to PNH, I am there 3 days and bring Mr Cung 10 pieces to copy. We are always at the wire by the end, so I expect higher prices given he sets aside regulars to meet my orders.

I have sold all items sewn my this tailor and his family in France, with linen all purchased at the Russian market. A finsihed dress, ca. 3 meters of solid color linen (2.50 USD/meter)x10=17.50. Cheap. I also bring fabrics from Jim Thompson in Bangkok and from New York city garment district...he does it all and having sold 90% of the items I made in France is testimony for Mr Cung!

Mr Cung's address: #183 rue 110, V.P. Ang Duong, telp 011332137

There are some tailors who are OK at copying existing garments, but I don't have a specific recommendation.

The exception to the above: for women, Romyda Keth's Ambre is great, and can be outstanding value for money.

I have been going for 10 years to have clothes tailored in PNH. Mostly copies. But also a few original designs with photos to help the tailor. There are outstanding tailors so know where to go. Start with Cung tailor in the Wat Phnom area. While this reply is a repeat it is worth saying again. I produced 75 garments all tailored and all very complicated patterns. 90% were sold to delighted French patrons. It will be impossible convincing me there are no suitable tailors on PNH for original or copy work

Just a quick note, I am 65 and American and while I don't know Mrs Cung, I would be delighted, if not honorted, to meet her. I imagine she only speaks Khmer, while Mr Cung speaks French and Khmer.

Remembering people of Mr Cung's age, 70+, is a trip back in Cambodia's tragic history. To imagine someone surviving Pol Pot and continuing to live their lives and ultimately prosper, is no small thing. Mr Cung's age, humility, sense of humor and excellence are images to treasure and to honor knowing what tragedies his family might have experienced. It is not a topic of conversation, but if you know Cambodian history, there is no need to ask. The ghosts still live and remain finally on trial.

Having lived several years in Phnom Penh 2000-2003. It has been referred to as the new Asian "hot spot". On last visit in September, it was hard to see that Phnom Penh was living up to it. This visit I am in another part of town, so see more clearly the remarkable growth, not only present but future. Streets are clean, Cambodian's developing a sense of pride and in 5 years little will be recognizable to those of us who fell in love with the simple, ratty old place it was. While I will miss the old place, Cambodian's deserve prosperty, have worked hard to gain it and are now on their way.

This round, Mr Cung is so busy, he has little time to squeeze anyone in. So if you are interested in his work, he will need more than a few days. Address: #183 rue 110, VP Ang Duong, tel 011332137.

Khmer Independent Tailor: Alive and working

In which case, the best is probably the small mom-and-pop shops. Many PP-based expats have their favorites (ours was on St 9, just south of St 308). Language can be a problem.

(I'll ignore the New Jersey debate, but will say this: from my current perspective (living in East Africa), no one who lives ANYWHERE in SE Asia should complain, ever!) (And that's recognizing that I don't have it so bad, living in Dar es Salaam...)

Khmer Indendent tailors (address and telp number) can be found on Google. They are very much alive, well and in full operation. They tailor primarily to men and do a very fine job. There is only one tailor here dedicated to women so the lines are long. They "dont allow" the men's tailors to sew women's clothing because, they say, very different skills are required.

The ghosts live in the current government and they'll never be tried. Most of the people just want to move on and the UN is dumping money into the vested interests' pockets in a vain attempt at bring a small number of aging, non protected, individuals to account. The whole thing is a picture show and the vast majority of those involved will never be held to account for their misdeeds.

They do indeed deserve prosperity but most won't ever see it. Income distribution in the country makes Thailand look downright equitable. Those who have prospered did so on who they knew not how hard they worked. My guess is hard work is inversely related to prosperity.

But thanks for your point of view Mrs Cung.

I've tried to make dress with mr. Cung already, the quality is awesome, no doubt for that! But the time management and the profesionalism is BIG ZERO!
I've disappointed by him BIG TIME!
Once I tried it was ok and everything ran smoothly, the 2nd time, was a major disaster, he promised me to make my dress to be done in 1 week ( for 1 dress that's should be more than ok), when I come back there it hasn't done yet, nothing! Not even cutting the pattern,
I'm still ok with that, and then he told me to come back 4 days later, then I came there, still it's not done not even cutting the fabrics, at that time I was already started pissed with him, I told him I need to back to my country in the next 3 days, still I put my patience I told him to make it done at least before I leave, and he said yes, he was even assured me with the exact time, then I come back there as the day he promised me, still nothing, then I told him again, ok, I will back to my country for 1 and a half month, at least please make it done by that time, again he promised and assured me,
By the time I come back from my country, I come there again, expected my dress should be done, instead of finding my dress is done, I found him there doing nothing but mingled with his bunch of fellas, gambled!
Leave my dress undone!
I was became a raging bull, totally major pissed with him!

So Simmonsk my advice to u if u want to recommend him do not forget to put his attitude as well as the whole package. ( his ...... attitude ).
I'm starting to curious as well, are u a spoke person for him? I can see from the way u praised him, just saying tho..
