BS AS off the beaten track

I am looking for interesting things to do in Bs As that are not in the tourist books. Looking for interesting neighbourhoods to walk around, maybe one or two day trips to the outskirts of the city somewhere.

Will be staying for a week and will not be able to visit other cities in Argentina. Does nay one have any interesting ideas. I have been multiple times before and have done most of the touristy activities. With the exception of visiting Gaucho’s shop I am looking for other new ideas.

thanks

Hmmmm... how about day trip to Colonia or Carmelo... or Montevideo?

Although not the most modern or punctual of railways in the world you could plan a day out somewhere on the train.
It would certainly be something different and you can see the countryside. You don't have to go far.Get off at a town take a look around have a bit of lunch then get the train back.
The bus is of course another option but the beauty of the railway is it routes through parts of the countryside where no roads go.

Colonia, I have been. Montevideo, from what I have heard is not for me. But Carmelo, never heard of it, I will do some research as soon as I fly back to EWR tomorrow. Thanks!

Haven't a bloody clue to be honest. :D

I have never been on a train in Argentina in my life but I would like to some day. They are rather colourful from what I saw when I spotted one at our towns station the other day. I would just pop down to the main station in BsAs when you're here and see what the timetables offer. If I can find anything interesting I'll get back to you.
Hopefully Gaucho100K , can give you more advice.

San Antonio de Areca makes for a nice day trip via bus or remise. Sam

That is my impression as well.
Would you believe my wife uses a chap who couriers documents to the Spanish Consulate in Bs As for her and commutes from here (100 miles away) every weekday on the train.
He actually doesn't get disrupted too often which I find hard to believe.

I'd vote for Montevideo too - I have a lot of fun there - I'm not sure what you've read about it that makes it seem "not for you", but if you like BA, a bit of nightlife, good restaurants, the surrounding wine country - vineyards and winery visits, and decent beaches... it might very well be for you. Other spots that you might want to wander about in, since you mentioned being off the beaten track - Adrogue (south of the city and easy to get to by train or minibus), up to Tigre and then up into the delta for the day or a couple of days, or within the city - wandering areas like Belgrano, or Villa DeVoto, Caballito (if you've only been to the Recoleta cemetery to see the usual monuments, you might find Chacarita more interesting), Barracas, Nueva Pompeya...

Like I mentioned I am not inclined to go to Montevideo, certainly not as a day trip. However, your tip concerning Adrogue is great. THANKS! I can use Hiddy's suggestion concerning a train ride as well. Tigre I have been to more than once. Its my dream to one day take six months off and go live there and write a book. Oh well maybe in another life. Thanks also for the suggestions for Neuva Pompeya and Villa DeVoto. I think the other areas I have been to, but if I am wrong than you have just planned most of my week. Excellent! Thank you very much,
