News: Qantas rejects Ansett appeal

Qantas rejects Ansett appeal
By BRAD NORINGTON
Monday 18 February 2002

Qantas has refused to allow Ansett to service its jets, preferring instead to send them overseas for maintenance.

Ansett administrator Mark Mentha has asked Qantas to reconsider, saying that giving the contracts to idle Ansett engineers would carry no commercial risk and save up to 400 jobs.

New friction between Qantas and its main domestic competitor comes just days from possible finalisation of the sale of Ansett to the Tesna consortium headed by businessmen Lindsay Fox and Solomon Lew.

Ansett's heavy maintenance and components workshops are up for sale because Mr Fox and Mr Lew do not want to buy them after deciding to outsource all of their aircrafts' servicing.

Qantas is outsourcing all heavy maintenance work on its Boeing 737s beyond the capacity of its own engineering crews. But it has told Mr Mentha that giving the tender to Ansett's maintenance business represented an "unacceptable risk" considering it could be put in liquidation if a buyer is not found. Qantas will send its Boeing 737s to Singapore for heavy maintenance.

Mr Mentha has appealed to Qantas's chief executive, Geoff Dixon, to change his mind. He said he understood Mr Dixon's concerns, but he gave a written assurance that, he said, had satisfied the concerns of other companies with which Ansett was doing business.

While you simply reproduced the news item...i suppose the vibe is that if AN doesnt want its former maintenance staff thats cool, but if QF wont take it - they're evil! looks like the kiwi (lack of) common sense is still around.

Er hold on QATW. My understanding is that Ansett Engineering, while not being sold to Tesna, is providing engineering/maitenance to AN under Fox/Lew, and they wanted to take on other contracts, QF included (and why not?). No doubt the costs to QF must be less to do it in Singapore, or NZ or wherever, but it does seem a bit un-Australian (ie: take the Ansett out of the issue, and remember that these folks are workers who would like to keep their jobs, and have the skills to do it considering AN's former 20-odd 737 fleet and their 767's).
