Train status on amtrak.com

Any idea how train status is calculated/updated? I'm on 2154 now. We arrived at PVD seven minutes late. It was posted as five minutes late on amtrak.com; close enough. But amtrak.com also lists this train as expected to arrive RTE 10 minutes early, arrive BBY on time, and arrive BOS two minutes late. What's up with the variations?

The arrival times are supposed to be entered by the station agent after the train's arrival. The estimated arrival time I think is computed (maybe by a computer) based on many situations and may not be updated as often.

I remember one time, while on that train, it said "train ___ departed STM 2 minutes late". The problem we were 5 minutes late before STM! (We had not yet arrived!)

The June issue of Amtrak's monthly publication for their employees discussed a new project about adding GPS and Video communications to the diesel fleet.

TCD (Train Communications Data) involves the use of geofences to create a virtual perimeter around a specific geographic area. Using GPS, when a train enters or exits an area, a notification is generated and sent to the Arrow system via NTAMS (National Train Activity Monitoring System). In addition, when a train is between stations, NTAMS calculates the predicted arrival time at the next station using the GPS location. This will allow CNOC, Mechanical, road foremen, reservation sales agents and others to gain location, direction, time and speed information. Some of this information also will be available to passengers through both Amtrak.com and “Julie.”

“For the first time, Amtrak will be able to keep track of where a train actually is and not just where it was,” said a senior director of System Operations.

Hmm, there is actually quite a bit of interesting content in there.. who knew that the White House had their own Quik-Trak machine? Also, I had no idea that there were plans in place to covert half of the Acela Cafe cars into revenue seating. Very interesting.. thanks for the link!

Not an answer to your question, but I think this site works better -- as long as you know the train number that is....

That's pretty cool, being able to see where every train in the country is.

Not quite -- it doesn't seem to be showing the Northeast Corridor and California corridor trains.

It apparently also doesn't support route deviations. Trains 5 and 6 are detouring via Wyoming today and they don't appear on the map at all (probably due to the train statuses being "Service Disruption" for both).
