Well, I did have a one-stop trip from Greensboro, SC, I think for $1.25(?) about two years ago that got me a whole boatload of mypoints

If it was two year's ago, I'd start looking into another such short trip within the next 6 months, just to ensure that they don't close your account.

I have heard of someone having their account closed who had never taken a paid trip for three years, but had done an award trip about 4 months before the end of the three year period and still had his account closed.

What's with the "anti-customer" bit. Hilton will take your points away after one year. AGR at least gives you three years.

Now I will grant you that Hilton will reset the clock with any activity, be it transfer, redemtion, or stay. But again, they'll zap you in one year's time, AGR does give you three. I'd say that's pretty customer friendly.

If one can't ride an Amtrak train in three years, then they're most likely just using AGR as a clearing house, which doesn't make them a customer. Sorry!

Their expiration policy is not anti-customer. Sorry if you misunderstood what I meant.

What I was referring to are drop-of-the-hat no-notice changes, inordinate delays in updating status/sending out new membership cards, difficulties in getting service when there are point posting problems, unanswered e-mails, etc.

Maybe anti-customer was a bit strong, but AGR is far from the pinnacle of excellent customer service.

I've ridden plenty of Amtrak trains. I just find that I get the most bang for my buck by converting CO points into AGR points and spending those. Amtrak gets paid when I transfer points into its program.

Well I did clarify things by saying "they are most likely", I didn't say that they were absolutely using AGR as a clearing house.

Personally I think that they probably should change the rules, such that any ride on an Amtrak train resets the clock. But then I don't set the rules.

Ok, thanks for clarifying.

I don't know most of what's coming up, but a little birdie has told me that they are trying to make improvements to at least some of those things that you list. The coming website changes tonight, are just a part of the improvements that are supposed to be coming.

One of the biggest things that I have heard is coming, is that they are trying very hard to fix the problems with points not posting from the mall. Merchants that can't seem to fix their problems may well be eliminated, and in fact I note that two were just recently kicked out of the program as of May 1st. I assume, don't know for sure, that it was because they either couldn't or wouldn't comply with the needed changes to ensure that points post correctly.

Now I'm certainly not promising anything, or that they fix everything, or that we'll like all of the fixes either; but at least from what I'm hearing they are trying to improve things for the better.

Is it still true that points will expire after 36 months without paid travel? A mall purchase does not extend point expiration?

Yes.
D. Point Expiration

1. Subject to the terms of this TOC, Points earned under the Program will not expire as long as the Program continues and the Member travels on Amtrak using their Membership Number within a 3-year period.
2. If no Amtrak travel is purchased, recorded or reported within a 3-year period, or if you do not make and honor an Amtrak travel reservation within this timeframe, your points will expire. You can view all Point and Travel activity by logging into ‘My Account’ on this Site.
*Edit to add - Chicago to Joliet, IL is only $5 each way. Remember it takes a week or two for travel to post.

Amtrak's Weekly Specials (http://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak/WeeklySpecials) make it very inexpensive to get a short trip in, particularly if you live in Chicago. For example, going the 20-minute one-stop from Chicago to Summit is $2.10, and that'll extend your points a further 3 years.

Sorry to hear that.
It can't hurt to call, though I don't think you'll have much luck. If you can take a paid trip within a short time from now, I believe that has worked for some people in the past.

I really wish AGR would display the expiration date in the online account management section and on statements.

My apologies for your loss, but as noted, there are many chances to ride the train.

so why doesn't it just say somewhere when you login to GR when your points expire?

It does- it's very clear in the rules on the site. I was worried about losing my points since I haven't taken Amtrak in about a year, was nervous, and then checked the site.
