New April Timetables are out

Amtrak Rolls Out New Train Schedules

System timetable shows routes, schedules, sample fares
WASHINGTON — Amtrak's new system timetable, which becomes effective April 24, 2006, is available now. Part of Amtrak's semi-annual timetable change, the booklet contains simple and easy-to-use information on train schedules — including new elements designed to make the timetable a more complete travel resource — a "how-to" reservation guide and sample fares to popular destinations, making it a great resource for planning a day's business trip or a family vacation.

More Information on Connecting Services

To make traveling easier for those who plan to extend their trips by connecting to local transit or airports, the timetable features intermodal connections available at many Amtrak locations. Boxes adjacent to train schedules detail connecting Thruway motor coach schedules and airport connections at some stations such as New York and Los Angeles. Frequent motor coach service between Penn Station New York and both LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports is available. New in this edition of the timetable is the FlyAway Bus Service between Los Angeles Union Station and Los Angeles International Airport. Direct airport transfers are available at Baltimore-Washington-International Airport Rail Station, Newark Liberty International Airport Station and Milwaukee Airport rail station.

For ease of use, the timetable is color-coded. Northeast Corridor services, for example, show Acela Express and Metroliner service in blue, reserved Regional and Keystone trains in orange, long-distance in white, connecting shuttle service in green and Thruway and connecting local services in grey. Trains outside the Northeast Corridor are color coded, as well, with blue for long distance, orange indicating regional corridor services, white for unreserved trains, grey for Thruway motor coach service and green for connecting trains.

Eastern Schedule Adjustments

Among various minor schedule changes noted in the new timetable is a new morning Keystone Corridor train departing Harrisburg for Philadelphia replacing an earlier one. Because of recent track improvements on the line, Keystone Corridor trains will have speed increases to a maximum 110 mph (up from 90 mph), preserving running times between Harrisburg and Philadelphia despite ongoing track work on the line. Also, North Philadelphia adds two morning frequencies to New York for a total of three stops each weekday to and from New York.

The Chicago-New York Cardinal adds Trenton as a station stop, and the northbound Miami-New York Silver Meteor departs Miami 25 minutes later than the previous schedule's 6:50 a.m. departure. The New York-Raleigh-Miami Silver Star adds a new stop at Cary, N.C. The New York-Chicago (via Cleveland) westbound Lake Shore Limited operates 30 minutes earlier, and the Boston-Albany train 449 connecting with the Lake Shore Limited at Albany leaves Boston 60 minutes earlier.

Western Schedule Adjustments

Some Oakland-Bakersfield, Cal., San Joaquin trains will operate a few minutes faster as a result of new double track funded by the State of California that eliminates some delays. Westbound Sacramento-Oakland Capitol Corridor trains are a few minutes quicker between Richmond and Oakland Jack London Square because of signal modifications funded by the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority.

Summer Track Maintenance Service Changes

Beginning this spring and extending into the summer, freight railroads on whose tracks some Amtrak trains operate will perform major track improvement and maintenance projects. During the maintenance work, some Amtrak routes will be substantially affected, and some of those changes are reflected in the new Spring-Fall 2006 System Timetable. Details may be obtained from the Amtrak.com website or through its information and reservations number: 800-USA-RAIL. Schedules in the System Timetable are subject to change without printed notice.

Where to Obtain Timetables

The new system timetable, which is free of charge, may be obtained at major Amtrak stations, travel agencies, on line at Amtrak.com, and by calling Amtrak's toll-free information and reservations number: 800-USA-RAIL. Also available on Amtrak's Web site are downloadable, route-specific and corridor schedules in wallet-sized card format.
