Help with H459
 

H459 is the buy one get one free coupon for college visits. I have never used Amtrak before. If tickets are bought in two passengers names who are elligible for this discount, but reservations are later changed for two different passengers, does anyone know how this will work out? I dont know if they are real big sticklers, or if once I have the tickets they will just let it slide.

Anyone?

Why not just call Amtrak and ask?

Every Amtrak passenger must have a ticket issued in his or her name. Random ID checks are now being made on trains. You can't just "change" a reservation without also changing the ticket. And the free companion offer for campus visits requires a seven-day advance booking.

I just got back from a trip to Montana using the H459 code.

The only way to make this work is to not call Amtrak. Do not stop at a ticket booth with a person attending because they will verify that you actually do qualify. So you need to be sure that you have the correct names of the people you are purchasing the ticket for.

You need to book online and have the tickets mailed to you. The tickets will need the signature of the person whose name appears on the ticket and a photo ID will be required after boarding the train.

Aside from that I had no problems and had to change trains each direction, so I had four sets of tickets.

If you call Amtrak they will probably determine that you don't qualify and cancel your tickets.

Of course I am assuming that you do not qualify but want to take advantage of the rate. If you do qualify, you should be fine.

We were backpacks only but checking baggage shouldn't be a problem as long as you meet the size and weight restrictions.

Yes, we checked our luggage and was no problem. We had about 15 checked bags in all.
