Earning Points using Someone Else's Name

Has this ever worked for anyone:

I bought Amtrak tickets for myself and 2 friends to travel on Acela NY to BOS. I gave my Guest Rewards number and as far as I know it was added onto all 3 round trip tickets.

Has anyone ever seen where points from all 3 tickets was credited? Or, are tickets strictly checked based on name and only the Guest Rewards member gets his travel credited?

I've often booked tickets for others, in addition to myself. I've never seen my GR number show up on the other tickets.

However if you were lucky enough to get the number on the other tickets, then good luck. You might receive the points and you might not.

If you do get the points it's also possible that, as another member here just posted the other day, when Amtrak audits things, that they may remove the extra points if they discover that the tickets were in your friends names.

It has happened

Amtrak doesn't have time to audit anything like this, in my opinion.

Points have shown up from other people's travel.

Both ways

I have had it happen both ways. On a trip I made early last year where I called to make reservations, both tickets (for my wife and me) were credited to my account. The latest trip that I booked on-line would not let me use my GR number for her ticket so she set up her own account and used that number. I guess that means that she will have to take me for a ride sometime.

Sorry to contradict, but please consider this post from FT member Milypan, who had points removed from his GR account for tickets used by friends.

I made a trip in August with 2 other friends of mine, I only recieved credit for my ticket only.

Thanks To Everyone!

Thanks everyone who posted their experiences.

I just checked my statement and I got one set of points only. But, with the Acela promotion, I got an extra 1500 points. This particular reservation was made over the phone, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Next time, I'll just try booking it online and seeing what happens. :D
