Splitting a companion ticket?

A friend of mine purchased me and my wife companion tickets -- for the two of us (she was a frequent Amtrak traveler and had the certificates/points/whatever). So now I have one ticket for both WAS-NYC-WAS. We plan to travel together but my wife now needs to return on an earlier train. Can we split the ticket into two separate tickets and take different trains? Or do we have to make any changes to both tickets?

You are tied together, you can't change her train without changing yours. You'd have to buy her a new ticket for the return and most likely yourself a new ticket if you try to take different trains.
