Gas Charges Show Up as "Attn Amex Accountant"

Hello,

I purchased gas from a Chevron a couple of times and instead of CHEVRON showing up like always, this showed up:

ATTN AMEX ACCOUNTANTCONCORD CA

I was wondering why this happened. Now, when you click on the "+" box and click Details it will eventually say Chevron but I was wondering if anyone else had this happen.

Is it because people use gas stations to test stolen cards? I'm just guessing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that has happened to. I noticed the same thing on my Starwood Amex and it was gas from a Chevron also. This is the first time I've seen that.

Since forever every ExpressPay (via my Blue's embedded chip) at 7-11 stores has shown up as coming from "ExpressPay on Blue, Tulsa" (followed immediately by the state code from where I'd used it). Threw me off first time I saw it, thought I'd gotten my card compromised, as I hadn't been to OK in years.

Yep, Chevron in California also. I was quite confused until I did the research. Funny thing, if you use google maps to track to the address shown in the transaction details, it puts you smack in the middle of an office park. Check it out...I guess that is either the Chevron or Amex office park.

It's probably because the merchant has their address for Amex set up like this, but the ATTN: line is in the wrong field:

ATTN: Amex Accountant
Chevron
123 Any St.
Anytown, AA 12345

Actually, the merchant has the "ATTN:" line in the correct field, according to the Postal Service's addressing standards. See USPS Addressing Standard 214, here:

Or, if you want to be paranoid about it, it might be Amex' way of flagging purchases from Chevron, so they can report this unAmerican activity* to the CIA.

*Chevron is owned by the government of Hugo Chavez.

No it's not.

Chevron is the former Standard Oil. Corp., founded in 1919 by John D. Rockefeller. They changed the name, but it's the same company, entirely U.S.-based, publicly held, traded on the NYSE...

You're thinking of Citgo.

It's "a" former Standard Oil company. I can remember these...

Amoco was Standard Oil of Indiana
Chevon was Standard Oil of California
Exxon was Standard Oil of New Jersey
Mobil was Standard Oil of New York
