replacement card when outside of the us

2 questions:

#1 do overseas amex locations have all types of cards should you need a replacement when you are away from home? i.e a spg card while traveling in the UK?
#2 if you had a US plat account and wanted to use the VS clubhouse could you just loose your card in the UK and have them give you a replacement card that looks like a UK account?

When I needed a replacement card in Venice, Italy the card was manufactured on a generic Amex blank at the Travel Service office while I waited, it did not include the artwork of the original card. This replacement card was temporary, valid only for a few months, and I soon received the official replacement.

I do not think there is a visual difference between USA and UK Platinum charge cards, unless the UK card has been recently updated to include a chip. I also do not believe that any American Express Platinum card is valid for admission to Virgin's clubhouse, unless you use it to purchase an Upper Class ticket . This may be a Centurion benefit.

Even with the Cent card, only UK-based Cent cards at accepted at the Clubhouse.

Too bad, that is the coolest clubhouse I've ever seen!

how do they know if it is a UK based cent card? do they swipe?
I had a replacement card issued for my amex gold in TLV in 1999 and it was slightly diff than my us issued card. the amex rep told me they get their blank cards from the UK.
also my replacement card did not have a short experation it was good for 2 years or so.

I think they can tell where your account originated by the first four digits of your account, i.e. US would be 3715-xxxxxx-xxxxx

I assume most have been converted to Chip & Pin cards as well, and are not Ti. I suppose there could be some Swipe & Sign cards out there still, so if you had a non titanium US card it might work.

The customer service phone number on the back of a UK issued card will be a number in the United Kingdom.

LL writes in 2018 that Amex stopped reissuing cards in overseas branches, can anyone confirm that?

I got a replacement plat card air mailed to me from London while I was in Los Angeles last month. They wouldn’t send me the card from the US branches despite me requesting it.

From German Amex, while your original Amex is elsewhere? Or just shipped to?

Note that the post to which you replied is dated in 2005. All, or nearly all, of these offices are gone. When they existed a replacement card could be fabricated on site while you waited, but those were magnetic stripe cards. That capability disappeared with the introduction of EMV chip cards. As far as I know all cards are now manufactured by contractors, not by card issuers.

Was the card sent from Canada, or was it locally produced?
