(10/30/23 organizational edit: general information expanded and moved to top of Wiki. Previously it seemed to be “buried” at the bottom. Should be more user friendly.)

AmEx “official” term for what we call Retention Offer is “Loyalty Incentive” (offer). Amex representatives/agents have no discretion over retention offers, it’s all computer/algorithm generated. Often there are 2 offers; points or miles for certain spend within certain timeframe, statement credit for same spend and timeframe. The agent might only state one of these, might need to ask about the other if interested. Sometimes a 3rd offer to use miles or points to pay annual fee.

Usually available every 13 months. Accepting an offer obligates keeping the account open for 1 year.

There’s no rhyme or reason to these offers. Some high use cards get no significant offer, some minimal use cards get high offer. Offers can change on a daily basis. No reports of adverse action due to asking about retention offers too often. Can discuss multiple (personal or biz cards) in one call. Agents are required to read a somewhat lengthy disclaimer if an offer is accepted AND if an offer is declined.

Upon inputting full account #, without # sign, call will automatically route to Personal or Business Membership Consulting (Retention) department. Each department can only discuss the applicable cards.

I’m not up to date, do they no longer offer prorated AF refunds after the 30days?

They never did.
The only pro rated you get after a product change

Do you recall if the offers open up again in the system only after the full 13month date? I’ll check again via chat but no sense wasting their or my time prior to the date (I’ve noted my last retention) if the system is closed off.

Correct, there are no refunds due to card cancellation. But there will be fee adjustments due to upgrades or downgrades. So if you missed a deadline to cancel, a downgrade may be preferable.

Thanks, for this information. I wasn't aware of this. Would you happen to know if at the 13 months mark, whether or not retention offers are guaranteed to show up?

Question regarding this, if I wait it out to the 13th month mark as blitzen had mentioned in hopes of a retention offer and either I am not offered one or it is one not worth taking and then decide to downgrade to say a Gold card to recoup some of my annual fee, do you know how how the fee adjustments work? That is, how is the adjustment calculated?

The process may be tweaked periodically, so I'll describe my most recent DP, which was actually an upgrade. On the day of the switch I got an account credit for the number of days to the next AF billing, i.e. the portion of the old account AF not yet "consumed". On the same day I got an account debit for the same number of days at the new AF rate.

The last two years I've received them at 12 months apart. YMMV

Was either of these offers $150 for a Platinum card?

Can you add the Marriott Bonvoy one, too? They are increased the AF from $450 to $650, so would like to know if there are any retention offers for that card out there. Thanks!

30k / 0 spend
Accepted

Opened a few years ago (2019 or 2020?) and pretty sure I never requested retention on it before. Nearly 0 spend on it, only used it for SUB and the 2021 dining credit. I do usually get at least the AF value out of companion pass though they can be a pain to book sometimes.

Some pretty decent retention offers. I think with Canadian AMEX's they don't offer nearly as much. Usually its just straight points without spend I think from what I've seen, but they don't amount to very much.

So is there any retention offer to keep you away from product change? I missed card renewal date by a few weeks, and I am thinking to downgrade my personal platinum to gold to recoup part of $695 annual fee.
